A mother who has lost her way
Back in July, Jonathon Russell showed up for work at the Modine Manufacturing Co. in Jefferson City, Mo., but decided that instead of another day in the trenches, he'd shoot and kill three of his co-workers. According to the story, he then turned the gun on himself, saving the taxpayers the expense of having him sit on death row for a decade or so.
Other than apparently harboring a penchant for mass homicide, Jon was a good sort, who supported his mother with his earnings at the plant. Now that Jon's gone, his mom says that she shouldn't have to pay for his actions, and she's filed a death-benefits claim with the Missouri workers' compensation authorities, claiming that since Jon punched in before he started punching out his co-workers, he died "on company time," and thus she's due the benefits. Company officials counter that, since he left the plant premises and drove to a police station before ending his life, he died of a self-inflicted wound while off the job site.
