When Jason said "my board", I think he was referring to the board in the context of comparing himself and his work on the site to a newb.
This is everyone's board and the bulk of decisions are made on a majority basis. Jason offered to step down as a moderator and the people voted to keep him - the majority spoke. Jason didn't post a motion to ban mattl for his remarks - that came later after mattl lost control and took the low road.
I didnt have time to read all the posts between flipping pancakes, but it would seem that Jason laid into mattl pretty hard and mattl fought back by injecting race into the arguement. Jason then spelled out what is and what isn't acceptable forms of Smack - only I'm not sure that everyone here understands the "rules". Some racial remarks are acceptable, others aren't. If I get Jason's arguement, the difference is when racial comments are directed AT a member, which in my book does cross a line. Making racial remarks about a group seems to be boardline within this forum as most people don't seem to get to offended by them.

Personally, I think you crossed the line by bringing Paul's family into the arguement. You can argue all day long that Paul is a racist, but to take that and suggest his kids are racist too was uncalled for and simple meant to piss him off.

I think you let something get under your skin and what was a mistake on one persons part has grown into a huge problem.
I'd be willing to say "just let the one comment go" as smokin's skin is pretty fucking think. HOWEVER nobody here has ever carried on a beaner, muslim, paki etc... remark such as mattl has. Sure we've all made a crack or two but he continually keeps the high flow of ignorance in this thread going.
It is because of that that it is now just BEYOND offending Smokin, myself and others and he is now, in essence TROLLING which is against our rules. There is no reason for him to be carrying on like this and if he had any sort of a brain he would have quit a long time ago. It is because of that that I think we should look at our other options to shut him the hell up.
Im going to take the time here to clarify things from my viewpoint. The thread that started this chaos was about automobile purchasing. I made some comments that were first not directed to Mattl. He took offense and responded with some VERY mild arrogance. I spotted it and drew first blood. THAT, however is consistent with any smack down in the Alley. He had every opportunity to respond with more smack. He attempted to do so for a handful of posts....in classic tradition, I continued to lay into him. This was fine, and would have stayed fine until he pulled the race thing.
What actually got me "ribbed" was not mattl's comments. Sure, to me, they demonstrated that he seems like "uneducated trash" in my eyes. What was most disturbing is how so many can not see the difference between a "smackdown" and crossing the line with racial slurs and then family comments. Its ok to "attack" lawboy from so many people's minds in any smackdown. Its the same thing. Someone or a group does not approve of someones profession or actions, and they called lawboy on it. I did likewise.
Why did he bring race into it? I dont know, but the crux of my dissapointment came with the Members of this board. They say that actions speak louder than words. There was no precedent for the action, but I was on the phone with SEVERAL members last night that I still do consider friends. THey all suggested that mattl, being racist should not be eligible for the giveaway. At the time, I had no intentions to ban him, neither did they. But he had demonstrated that he was seemingly racist. Why would we want viperalley to givewaway a gift like that to someone who lacked such moral fortitude? I threw up a poll. To my dismay, the members voted in his favor. What does that say? To me, it shows how actions really DO SPEAK LOUDER than words. The members voted to keep his eligibility. To me thats a show of support for racism by a large percentage of the participating audience. Maybe many here do not openly endorse such sentiment becuase it is not acceptable by societal standards. However when hiding behind the cloak of a vote they show their colors. It made me wonder why I Volunteered my time to help put together the giveaways, help moderate board policy, and help put together this "sandbox" for a group of guys who contain membership with such a questionable value system. After we said that family comments were off limits, he continued to troll by pulling that card. Smack is smack and there are lines that should not be crossed. Maybe my comment to Paul Billberry crossed the line a bit as well, but I was HONESTLY dissapointed in his apparent lack of ability to see the difference between smack and racism. Maybe Im more sensitive to this subject from where I was raised. I am confident that no one can accuse me of being a liberal, but this was clearly taught to me as WRONG from day one.
