is 3g enough to get a decent surround sound audio system?

finally on the up and up and want a fairly decent surround sound system for my new place. 3g isnt including the TV, any help is appreciated. starting from scratch in materials and knowledge

I would spend more than that on speakers alone, if you can.
That also depends on the space it will be in.

of course you can always spend more....and if you listen really close you will be able to tell the difference between a $1200 sony receiver through JBL speakers and subs and some high end system that costs in excess of $10k.

that little bit of difference never mattered to me so it all just depends on what you are looking for.

my advice for a great bang for the buck system: buy the best sony receiver and jbl speakers. you can find these at any best buy. i have always concerned myself more with the placement of the speakers and the type of input into the system in trying to achieve great surround sound. if you have enough room, put in two subs rather than just one. and put in a rear center channel too.

im no expert on this stuff but i can put u in contact with the guys who put systems in my houses and the above advice was given to me by them.

Sorry for the bad news. IMO the speakers are the heart of a great sound system. If you REALLY care then you may have to cough up.

Would you get a Viper? Sound is like that.

i agree jeff but surround sound systems built specifically for movies are different than a true sound system. the demands put on the speakers arent as great.

Lawboy, you are correct. The placement and a matched set of cheaper speakers can create a very good system but remember the placement is critical. This is back to room size and the "sweet spot" chair placement.

You can do OK at Best Buy.

For great spacial aspects of movie type surround I would highly encourage going with Harmon Kardon for the reciever. Get matching speakers. Klipsche is great, but cost a little more and you have to get the big ones for it to really kick ass.
How loud are you ready to take something?
Is this a movie thing or a more classical sound reproduction thing?

RCA has some really nice shit, great price too. I advise going with one of thier all in one home theater systems from wal-mart.
