Par,
I was wondering if a carrier can turn like that?
Guess it can.
Just Look at that Massive Wake. Can you see me. Onmy Limited class x4 hull seadoo comming in fast and jumping a wake like that.
Talk about some SERIOUS AIR.
The Russian Alpha's were noisy as hell and had bogus reactors that periodically leaked and killed people, but they were sooooo fast they could outrun our best torpedoes back when they came online. Now that was a shock to the Navy and prompted some serious torpedo re-development.
Think about it, they could run 60 knots! That's some serious horsepower.
The Mark-68 torpedoe was developed as a result of the rumours of the speed of the alpha class. Pretty amazing sub, 14 knots on the surface and 45 knots submerged (and noisy as you-know-what).
The rumours where at the time that the alpha could make 60+ knots submerged, intelligence later revealed the true speed to be closer to 45-47 knots but that was still faster than any other sub. The Alpha thanks to the super strong titanium hull could go deeper than any other sub.
Still, i say give me an Ohio any day of the week. Being superquiet, stealthy and pack an incredible punch is much more important in strategic warfare than being fast.
Ever heard about the SKVAL torpedoes?
It's a new technology developed during the mid nineties in russia and about to be tested now.
Basically it's a torpedoe that goes so fast that it atomizes the water around it, creating a airbubble which ti travels in. Rumoured to be significantly faster than 100 knots.
The kursk sub sank during the sea trials of the skval torpedoe, due to the energy the skval requires to travel at those speeds they used a fairly instable solid state fuel and a torpedoe exploded while onboard the kursk. That's at least what the rumour mill amongst usually very correct sources are saying...
I watched a discovery channel documentary once on the building of a carrier. Those turns and deck angle ARE real. It was amazing what those things can do.
BUT... Craig has the best picture so far
The carriers go through a shake down post dry dock or refit. The carriers are the fastest boats in our fleet, the Truman did over 70 knots (unofficial)during sea trials off Cherry Point. I know this because we raced her and had a huge head start. The fucker flew by us like we were standing still.
The picture of the B1 has to be photoshoped, still an awesome photo though.
I've never heard of the Alpha's going that fast. It seems hard to believe due to the water resistance and the size of the craft.
