How hard would it be to change Hard Drives in my Dell Lattitude?
This laptop of mine has never been right. I still can not account for 5 gigs of used space on the hard drive. And there are times that it runs very slow.
It has 1024 MB memory Family 15 model 2 2.2 ghrtz Stepping 7 (whatever that means). You can not reformat this hard drive do to windows xp and the type of partition.
So if I suspect the HD is it something I can replace like in my home pc?
I bought the system from a place that went out of bus at a liquidation of assets thing.

Problem you can have with laptops is that they often use proprietary drivers for their video screens and such.. The hard drive itself is probably smaller than a normal desktop drive as well. Lastly, if you have a backup disk you might want to try using that as they will usually reformat and restore your factory settings. If you don't have one, you might check the dell site about ordering one. There are several things that can go wrong when swapping out a laptop HD.. just keep that in mind.

Latitude's all use IBM Travelstar drives. What model Latitude? C600s and up follow the below for swap:
On the right hand side of the machine, you will see the drive bay. This is held by a single screw on the bottom. Remove the screw and pull "down" on the latch/bay a bit, then pull strait out.
Remove the 2 screws holding the drive to the bay latch. Remove the connector by pulling strait out.
Put your new drive in, in the reverse order. I use 20gigs in most of my stuff.
You CAN format that drive, reguardless of NTFS layout.

MM,
I actually listen to both you and SE when it comes from computer stuff. You guys are both very intellengent when dealing with anything pc related.
I don't have a recovey disk.
I don't mind buying another operating system. (woulded mind going back to 2k.)
So what do i do? To be honest with you, not fo parinia (sp) but, I thin this HD is compramised. And I do a lot with it. I wouldn't mind starting over. But I would rather not have to buy another laptop with these specs. ( I would rather buy aN MN12 that has been built with that kind of $)
So what do i do?

leave your current drive the way it is, put it aside as a backup...
buy another drive, and win XP pro, and setup camp on the new one.
At least that's what I'd do...
maybe get Norton Ghost & a DVD burner and bake a copy of the drive.
I like my HP 200e burner, with firewire + USB. Was a bit pricey but works well.

Are you saying that I should use an external HD? I have a 15 gig jukebox but it is too slow to consider. I am running xp pro. But I don't like it.
Where can I buy an OE HD for this laptop? It is a C640.

Are you hooked to a network with room that you can perform a full backup?
Before you remove any drive, perform a full backup to a known good media. Then if you change the HD out and are successful with the replacement all the files and files structure of the old one is available to you. Backing up is in the adminitration settings in control panel.
You could also just backup programs and information without the OS, that way the data is not lost. This will allow for less space used up.

My question is: Can I change the HD on my laptop. I have all the info backed up on disks.
If I change the HD. Will it be as easy as putting a new one in and inserting the windows disk? Or will I have to re-flash the bios and a bunch of weird stuff?

If you change the HD, the type change should be registred when you restart. I have changed several HD and never concerned about the HD, as long as it is IDE for IDE, or EIDE for EIDE, that is the most important. You may need to reinstall drivers, but that can be done afterward or can be done off of the recovery disc from dell.
