Re: ViperAlley has more users online than ViperClub!
It is interesting, as I had this discussion with a regional VCA president yesterday. My comments: The VCA site is rich in technical information and Viperalley is more of a social place. That is a HUGE mistake on the part of the VCA, as they seem to forget what the "C" stands for: Club. A club is generally where you get together with friends and talk about everything and anything. You don't get together with your poker buddies and talk about cards. Nope, that is usually the last thing you talk about. Yet some seem to be terrified of the social aspect of the club, going so far as to move the Snake Pit to the bottom of the main page. While Viper owners certainly have that one thing in common (Vipers), the true purpose of the club is as a social gathering. The one thing that the VCA site seemingly discourages.
I would add that many here continue to post there (as do I) when it comes to answering questions on the car itself. .Org will continue to draw "newbies" that are new to Viper ownership and have questions about their new rides. And with all due respect, .org does have a "safe haven" for SRT-10 owners, as the overwhelming opinion (right or wrong) is pretty negative on the Alley. It is also a pretty reliable place to discuss upgrades in more detail. But when it comes to discussions outside of the Viper, that site does not hold a candle to the Alley. And therein lies the rub: Those that have had their cars for a while (or don't have one at all) are pretty much up to snuff on the technical side and want to hang out with other people that they can shoot the shit with, regardless of the topic. The fact that many own Vipers assures them of at least SOME mutual ground, although it hasn't seemed to help poor ol' Remster of late.
Now, I will put in one note that I am sure will inspire some disagreement: The VCA is a good organization, especially at the regional levels. Most of the regions get together for social stuff with the Viper as a byproduct. Some of us hook up on Friday nights for a local cruise with a bunch of other sports car enthusiasts. We end up talking about just about everything except cars. Same with our local VCA meetings. We get about half of our members to show up each month (20 cars or so) and we talk about the cars a little bit in the parking lot and everything else in the meetings themselves (other than that chubby dude that gets up and gives a "state of the club" speech every damn time ). We can still compare mods and talk about the best service in the area (or worst), but that is not why people come to the meetings and many of the events. I don't think you get enough for your dues, but I do think that you get what you put into it. And as for the website, most of the local guys (and gals) don't know either board exists.
Bottom line: The Alley will continue to grow as more and more Viper owners gain a comfort level with their cars and aren't in the upgrade market at the time. They will just want to hang out with like-minded (and a few no-minded) individuals and shoot the shit. Consider it a "graduation" to a different level.

Chris, you hit the nail on the head - the Org site is NOT representative of the typical VCA Member. The majority of VCA members dont have a clue about what goes on at the website.
I know that DotOrg would insist that we are wrong in that assessment. They've told me numerous times they want to be the social place for owners as well; but on their terms, where the true membership has very little say in the rules that govern the site.
At least with the local clubs you get to vote on your officials. On DotOrg, very few people have an actual vote on anything.

Oh and an interesting note on the dues: $100 gets you one year in the VCA and a subscription to VIPER Magazine (which itself seems to be lacking in the social aspect of the club). A little over half of that goes to the local club to do various events - we underwrote part of the last Dyno Day and will cover the annual holiday party, etc. Not terrible.
But get this: Join the Dodge Durango Club for $45 and you get an embroidered baseball cap, embroidered owners patch, decals for your car (or truck), brass key ring, and choice of either polished brass or chrome license plate frame. Oh yeah, and that $45 covers THREE YEARS of membership. Hmmmm...

I'm relatively new to the Alley, but I have to say Packet, this site is much more enjoyable on a daily basis than the Org. Keep up the good work, it is greatly appreciated.

It wasn't so long ago that this place had so few voices. We've evolved incredibly fast! Kudo's to you MP! Besides all the entertainment, you've kept this site "mechanically" on the cutting edge. We are all grateful!
We're still growing so I would imagine that the VCA will soon be dwarfed by us! Who wudda taught!
