Cop dies after driving 109mph into the side of a pickup

DEADLY CRASH: Officer was driving 109 - News - ReviewJournal.com

So a couple weeks ago this cop is responding to a domestic violence call around 1am. He is driving down Flamingo Rd which is 2 lanes each direction, 45mph doing 109mph no lights or sirens, runs right into a truck making a left hand turn at 90mph. The cop dies because of the speed and also he isn't wearing a seat belt for whatever reason. They perp walk the driver of the truck through the media and the sheriff immediately arrests him for DUI and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. So for a couple days this guys face is plastered all over our news and newspapers, they are holding vigils for the dead cop, fund raisers for his young daughter, etc. while crucifying the driver of the truck. He blew a .03 right after the accident and .02 an hour later and failed the field sobriety test also. But who wouldn't fail the field test after just getting hit in the side of your car by a car going 90mph? However he never lied and said he had been drinking earlier, but stopped about 2 hours before he left, when the accident happened he got out and tried to save the cop, but couldn't due to the fire, etc.

I wonder if this guy will get a fair trial if they end up going ahead with the charges? I imagine with our crooked Vegas system they will end up lowering the charges to driving while impaired since he was below the .08 and he will have to plead it out.

To top it off, the domestic call the 2 cops were responding to was BS. A teenage girl who has some mental issues called 911 and said her dad was beating the shit out of her. Turns out she was upset at her mom for using her razor and attacked her mom, and protecting the mom the dad slapped the daughter. This all took place earlier in the day as when the girl made the 911 call at 1am the mom and dad were at the hospital as the mom has some kidney issues and was getting dialysis. They haven't announced it they will press charges against this girl yet.

I get the impression this guy will be paid a fortune by the city/county. He was well below the legal limit and the cop was clearly in the wrong.

I bet there is a line of attorneys salivating for a crack at this one.

They could rule that he was still 'impaired' - even if below the legal limit - and then just lower the charge...

He didn't commit a crime whether he was under influence or not, you cannot "yield" to a car with no lights or siren in the dead of night, and at 109mph the car was either out of sight around a corner bend or would appear very far away with a glance before pulling out.

You can't yield to a car, making a right turn onto a highway, unless it has lights and sirens ?

Geez we are all in trouble.

Somewhat similar case in San Antonio a month or so ago. Cop responding to another's call for assistance (not life threatening) at 2AM, no lights, no sirens. Clips another motorist at around 90mph, wads the cruiser up and dies. In this case, no attempt to pin it on the innocent hit-ee.

About a month or 2 ago there was a police officer killed in his car.. The Driver of the semi was charged with with everything they could throw at him.. 3 days later the charges were dropped when it came to everyones attention the cop was drunk in his orange mustang doing donuts on the highway when the semi hit him...

Lights and sirens are to alert you of emergency vehicles and/or faster then normal driving. If I saw a car a quarter mile away and asumed they were driving around 45 it would give me twice the time as one driving 90.

I would wait regardless if I saw lights. I believe that is what he was saying.

If you can yield to a car you can't see, then I guess teach me.

a car going over TWICE the speed covers that distance TWICE as fast...
and at night, depth perspective is off... he wouldnt have been hit by the car if it had been going the speed limit, or close to...
there is a reason for the lights on top of a squad car... to get your attention.
