John, you couldn't be more wrong in this case. They had to open up my neck, move my windpipe and scrape out the cartiledge between my C4-C5 vertabrae. I was in a neck brace for a min of two weeks. (Wore mine for three by choice) but was walking immediately after the surgery even if the room was a little drafty, know whut I mean?
There was no way in f'king hell I was gonna use a piss box, I got tha' hell up and walked to the pisser! All I remember prior to the surgery was
"Okay, count backwards from ten..."
...
"Welcome back! How ya feel?"
That was it!

Mine is mid-back as well, basically the source is between the C6 and C7 (when looking at an X-ray it makes sense). The offending nerve sits between the shoulder blades.
My problem is that the nerve exiting this area on the left side is the one pinched. It causes pain "behind" the left shoulderblade, down the left arm and forearm, and leaves the index and middle finger a little "tingly". FYI - Sometimes the same symptoms can mean heart attack, not in my case...
Last year I had a cold in Jan, and one time I sneezed and it shot stingers down my arms!
THIS IS EXACTLY THE SYMPTOMS OF A DEGENERATING Disk.
You're only gonna get gradually weaker until you go under the blade. My two cents. I lived it, and thus can tell you that. It Sucked not being able to hit my weights!
What has helped me is I have had to take a bit of a break from doing upper-body: especially anything that rotated the shoulderblades or made me tuck my chin towards my chest (effectively stretching the neck where the nerve is pinched). I am slowley getting back into working upper body, but not going heavy. I noticed my left arm is significantly weaker thanks to this pinched nerve thing.

Brady,
Sorry to rain on the parade! I do hope things work out with Joel that you don't have to deal with the surgery BS that I went through.
