Buy an inversion table Brady. I use one and it helps tremendously when the problem rears its ugly head.

surgery will cure nothing.

chiros and proper exercises(PT) can work wonders.....finding the right one is key. sleep positioning and positioning while doing the little nonessential activities can really cause problems.

I agree with the back surgery part being a no no. I am young and in fairly good shape, very active, etc...I sleep on my side and have a pillow under the arm for support. If I sleep on my back or on my stomach, I am screwed royally the next day.

I am hoping Joel brings a glove for me on Monday. I would hate to be treated by a guy whom has bare handed the NoMan.

John, you couldn't be more wrong in this case. They had to open up my neck, move my windpipe and scrape out the cartiledge between my C4-C5 vertabrae. I was in a neck brace for a min of two weeks. (Wore mine for three by choice) but was walking immediately after the surgery even if the room was a little drafty, know whut I mean?

There was no way in f'king hell I was gonna use a piss box, I got tha' hell up and walked to the pisser! All I remember prior to the surgery was

"Okay, count backwards from ten..."

...

"Welcome back! How ya feel?"

That was it!

Mine is mid-back as well, basically the source is between the C6 and C7 (when looking at an X-ray it makes sense). The offending nerve sits between the shoulder blades.

My problem is that the nerve exiting this area on the left side is the one pinched. It causes pain "behind" the left shoulderblade, down the left arm and forearm, and leaves the index and middle finger a little "tingly". FYI - Sometimes the same symptoms can mean heart attack, not in my case...

Last year I had a cold in Jan, and one time I sneezed and it shot stingers down my arms!

THIS IS EXACTLY THE SYMPTOMS OF A DEGENERATING Disk.

You're only gonna get gradually weaker until you go under the blade. My two cents. I lived it, and thus can tell you that. It Sucked not being able to hit my weights!

What has helped me is I have had to take a bit of a break from doing upper-body: especially anything that rotated the shoulderblades or made me tuck my chin towards my chest (effectively stretching the neck where the nerve is pinched). I am slowley getting back into working upper body, but not going heavy. I noticed my left arm is significantly weaker thanks to this pinched nerve thing.
Brady,

Sorry to rain on the parade! I do hope things work out with Joel that you don't have to deal with the surgery BS that I went through.

Jay K.

Stingers can be a few things. I used to get them on occasion (rare) playing football - not from disk degeneration. I do have some now as shown by the MRI's, but also a pretty misaligned back and knotted-up ligaments around and under the shoulderblades. Working on those 2 areas over the last 3 weeks has helped all but eliminate my issues. If this doesnt work out permanently and surgery is the last option then sure, that is the next step...aint gonna live on pills.

Oh yeah - had a therapist do the "work out the knots thing" behind the shoulderblade and around it. Same thing. Hurt like hell, was sore for 3 or so days afterwards... This was done in conjunction with all the other stuff (Adjustments, Light workouts/stretching) so do not know its specific level of effectiveness.
