Real racing -- question for the pros here

If one was interested in racing road courses, where would he begin looking for info? Not viper-specific races, SCCA?

Any recomendation for driving schools?

I would call any larger road course and go from there.

Re: Real racing -- question for the pros here

Not in the least bit a pro, but here's my $.02 anyway.

Skip Barber, Bondurant, Panoz whatever's nearest you. Those will be higher dollar ... A grand per day, or more but maybe worth it.

Or you could do the low-buck, high frequency route that many of us have taken which is D.E. events. They start you off in the novice class where you're required to run every lap with an instructor in the car. Some are better than others but often you can find a real good one and learn a lot. It's cheap too ($150-$400) per weekend depending on school. I typically pay about $250. The advantage here is you get practice practice practice. You can go to the track for 15 weekends for what it'd cost you at a 4-5 day school. Seat time combined with instruction makes up for a lot.

Re: Real racing -- question for the pros here

MM, I wanted to do that this summer. Talked with the guys at skip barber school, but nothing really interested me. I wanted a 2 day course that would include drag racing, slalom, skid, oval, and emergency lane change. I don't think the "driver courtesy" section is relevant. Little dissapointed that I could not find what I wanted...

the guy told me that vca members get 25% off the cost of the program at skip barber...

Re: Real racing -- question for the pros here

I have done the Bondurant 4-day course and it was absolutely top-notch. They have courses that range from a one hour "experience" to car control and evasive maneuvering to the 4 day GP, which will get you on the way to your SCCA license. I did a 3-day Panoz deal with the Woodhouse gang at Road Atlanta. The format was tailored for guys that had a lot of Viper Days Challenge and W2W experience.

I recommmend 2 days of formal instruction before you spend your first dollar on go-fast goodies on the Viper. You'll be faster and safer because of it.

Can you see the light? The bridge? hear the calling? Follow your intuitions.......Come to the parking lot. It's all good in the parking lot. If you start autocrossing it will make you much faster once you get into road racing.

Give it a shot. :thumb:

When I think of AX, I have lurid visions of a bunch of dorks running around with shoe polish bottles and madly clicking away at their lug nuts with torque wrenches.

Some of the worst road racers I've seen have been know-it-all's straight outta the parking lot. Slingin' their cars around with no finesse like they thought it was all about having quick reactions.

Re: Real racing -- question for the pros here

i understand where you are comming from. I do. I also understand that not one of you can link me to a web sight where you managed to get FTD while autocrossing... (PLEASE Prove me wrong!)

Face it, you couldn't hang with the rest of the boys while autocrossing and you decided to go into road racing where you can't hang with the players there either...... (PMUM, Is the only exception)
And so now, here you are.... You can't win while roadracing. At least not when there are actual players on sight.... Sure, you may fanagle your way into a race with two or three cars and edge out a 2nd place or something but when you show up at the track people don't say things like "Oh Fuck! There goes 1st place".

So if you would like to steer MM down the road to being passed then by all means, please continue giving him this advice.

MM,
Grow in stages. Max out one and jump to the next... Max it out and so on... You will fly by notsoseriouseric in no time.

It would take far less talent than PMUM driving drunk while flicking boogers out the window at slow green tupperware to spank your ass on the road course. Don't even begin to equate yourself with being in his class.

There's not a doubt in my mind. And even if he couldn't, what would that prove? You aren't the PMUM equivalent of AX. Hell even the equation of AX to roadrace is laughable.

FTD? Gay florists deliver centerpieces to the homos that make it to the podium?

Not-so-serious about winning himself has laid down the smack. Stay good at smack talk, it may be the only thing you have.

I will work on getting a national title in SM II next year. Go ahead and hold me to it.

You can't say that autocrossing would hurt MM in giving himvaluable racing training. Actually Eric, you probably can, but anyone with serious ability to race would agree with me.

I have heard nothing but good things about the Bondurant School. I drive past it every day coming into work.

red is right, autoXing is a great way to learn the basics and start a long and successful career.

Didn't schumacher start out that way? Auto Xing is about as helpful as playing gran turismo 3.

You started it dork. I just disagreed with your incorrect blanket statement about AX making you a "much faster" road racer. It will not necessarilly do that. AX is all about slinging the car around and that is not what you want to learn to make a good future road racer.

Karting and cycle racing are where all the real RR jocks come up from.

Take a class like Dean said then do the more affordable club events like Eric said.

Or you can take Red's advice. I've done AX a couple times. Got a first place trophy. Moved on.

The rumble strips at 120mph are much more gratifying than tapping cones at 30mph.
