I've recently started playing poker online. I've had interest in the game, but never really played. I'm more of a vegas blackjack/craps/roulette guy. I have to admit, I'm totally hooked. I've always been good with numbers, but never thought poker would be a good game for me as I'm ADD/impatient.
I decided to jump on pokerstars.com and just jump in. I've played a lot of sit-n-go tables. I figured before reading books and learning, I need to get into some live games to know WHAT questions I'd have. I've played two long tourney's, one with 100 buy in with 350 people the other was a monster 3600 tourney. I finished in the top 5% of both. I know this is a game of swings, so I fully expect to have my ass handed to me shortly. So far I'm up well over my initial money.
I recently picked up 3 books. I know live play will be totally different from internet play. I'm reading Gus Hansen's book, every hand revealed. It's a fun read as he documents every hand he played during the aussie millions. I hope to play my first live games during the week of sema. I'm going to get into some small games just to test the waters. I'm loving the math involved. I have no belief that I'll be some great poker pro, but I have to admit, right now it's a fun game. Something tells me it will be like golf, even when good, it's still a frustrating game.
So how many others are in this boat? On a final note, why is it when you tell someone you are playing poker they instantly tell you of their "bad beat". When someone tells me they play blackjack, I don't bring up an old hand. Just seems weird.

Are online casinos better now. I remember back in the day where you would pay money, and if you won, you never got your money. Are they more regulated now?
I play for fun with friends (NOT good players). Tried the online thing and did really well for a couple days, then couldn't win for shit after that.
I read "The little green book" (forget who wrote it, sorry), its pretty good. Less about numbers and more about strategy and how to read/analyze players.
I figure with online play, math is my best option. From just an initial start, the online guys love hard pushes. The blinds raise pretty quick so these guys push heavy at odd times. I notice a lot of guys playing multiple tables. I assume these guys are using a tracker system of some sort to rate players. I can't imagine how you can only play your cards in this game without watching the habits of other players. I guess whatever works for you.
I play at Full Tilt now, I like live games. I have done some WSOP and WPT Tournies for as much as $10,000 a seat. I've played at the same table as Phil Helmuth, Scotty Nguyen, Erik Siedel, David Choi and more, that's where the real fun is, especially Phil
A group of us are talking about doing a few local games for 1000 enter with the winner getting an entry into the WSOP.
The Main Event is a $10K buy in and won't be for a while. North American Championship is going on now up by Dohhunter in Canuckleville. Here are some future events
I still have the virgin boy seeing tits for the first time problem. I get all excited and shit when I play hands. I have to calm down and get over the initial excitement of playing. I'd be the worst bluffer in the world right now! haha

Just be careful bro. Gambling can quickly take over your life. I have been doing the online stuff for 4 years, it is a lot different than in person, so you need to know your "reads". Sunglasses, as much as they are goofy looking, they are a good item to have if you are not used to playing "to a room".

A few of the forgotten members played some hardcore poker, especially Highroller, also included were AJ his g/f, Dohhunter and Rockstar. We used to play an online tounament every Tuesday for $30 a seat, that was fun
I stay within my means. I've loved gambling since I was in college. It's how I got enough money to really start my first business honestly. Started with a 500.00 bank roll. Over 2 years built it to almost 20k. I enjoy the rush of gambling, but I do low level stuff. I rarely play BJ over a 25min table. Rarely will I get to 100.00 hands unless I'm up quite a bit. I have a 1000/500 rule. If I'm 1000 up I quit and if I'm 500 down I stop and take a break for another time.
Poker is a fun, addictive and sometimes a ruthless game.
The above mentioned " 1000/500" rule is a very good place to start if u r new to game.
But more importantly people dont realize the importance of playing with play/fake money online.
I would suggest spend months doing that .. see if u can increase ur fake money bankroll. The reason why i emphasize that is we as individuals dont analyze ourselves as much as we should and spend all our energies reading books and playing poker, learning to analyze others.
Play with fake money online over a couple of months and see where u end up. In the process u will learn alot bout urself, how tight u were how loose u were, wat emotional states were bad for u to play poker with, etc etc...
then start playing with real money again.
Good luck in ur poker endeavours and like someone said, be careful when it comes to gambling. If done right it can be a good side business, if done wrong than u have pretty much ur whole life on the line.
I would def recommend reading doyle brunson's Supersystem. Its a good poker book and most of the successful wsop players have read it prior to entering the tournament. Another good read is Greenstien's Ace on the River.
Im in Seattle, Washington for the next 2 month's and have been playing at the clearwater Indian Casio to kill time. I am up 3 grand on black jack. Tried the online thing but nothing beat's being at the table playing instead of hitting the keyboard.
Best books Ive read are are Harrington on cash games vol 1 and 2. These have done wonders for my game.Turned me from a break even player to a ~2bb/100 winner.

I can't take free seriously. If I have nothing to lose I'll screw off and not play right. I have to have something at risk. Right now I play 50/100 enter tourney's. It's a resonable amount and if I win something I at least feel like it was worth my time.

That's funny. HR, AJ, Brother, Doh, and myself were just considering resurrecting that game.
If you are interested in a closed door weekly online tournament, post here and let me know. I'll keep everyone posted.
Doh, AJ, and HR are sitting down for day 2 of the NAPC today. I busted out on day 1.
One word of warning on the online games..... NEXTEL. I have a friend who got his ass handed to him several times online..turns out the other players were communicating via Nextel.
I play online just for fun. Don't really trust computers to much with my money. Seen to many hands where the nuts beats the second nuts over and over again. In live play you rarely see the nuts, online it is very frequent. Heading to Vegas thursday. Gonna try some 10/20 limit and maybe PLO. No limit has to many crazy ass people playing and pushing with nothing and then hitting there hands. More skill in PLO and stud. Might play no-limit if I find a good game.
Rockstar I'd love to play in a weekly tourney with other VA members. Is the buy in still 30 or has inflation taken its toll...lol
