I have been looking for new set audio system for my home. I have been looking and found some nice setups and just wanted to get some opinions. I heard, B&W 802D, Linn akurate, Focal be so far but can't really decide on system. what other nice systems are out there that i should consider.
Check out some MBL gear if you want to go really high end. Lyngdorf makes a phenomenal room correction preamp processor as well as arguably the best digital amp in existence. Speakers...the list goes on and on forever really. Kharma, Wilson, B&W, DALI, McIntosh, Definitive Technologies, Burmeister, Meridian, Martin Logan, Quad, Lansche, Usher...
However, if you don't want to spend untold fortunes and still get some simply amazing gear, check out Sunfire's TR-3 and their speaker system. Also, Eminent-technologies $2k towers probably are on par with anything in the 20-30k range.
Honestly, I could talk your ear off about this stuff for hours, but I am not gonna sit here and write 400 companies. If you want to talk on the phone, just PM me.
Excellent group of gear and great advice. You know your shit. Compliments.
I thought that I was the only one that loves that stuff, albeit, I have been out of it for the last two years, so this is a good topic for me to "brush" up.
Quick hit question (1 minute format like the debate tonight):
1. For standard home theater (meaning "every Joe" house) - to go along with the HDTV, what would you recommend for DVD, AMP and Speakers (lets go 5.1 to stay with the "every Joe") and (7.1 for the audiophile).
2. Acoustics only - what would you recommend for a "just acoustics only" room? (Leave out the acoustic tiles and sound deadening)
3. Full blown movie theater room - under $20k
4. Full blown movie theater room - sky is the limit $$$.

1) DVD player--Oppo DV983 or their upcoming BluRay player NO QUESTION
Amp. Sherwood R672 or 772 receiver, Fluance or Elemental Designs speakers with an Elemental Designs powered Sub.
2)Lyngdorf TDAI 2200 with CD player of choice (Oppo would be fine). Eminent Technologies LFT-8 speakers or Lyngdorf's own open baffle speakers. The latter are far more expensive and probably not much better. NuForce's amps and speakers would also be a good buy for the money
3) I am not a huge projector guy, so I can't comment on projector manufacturers, although I myself am a fan of the Sony SXRD, JVC Dila, and Marantz/McIntosh DLP models
Sound: To be honest, its gonna be tough to beat the Sunfire amp and speakers for home theater usage. His system can deliver sound pressures cleanly into the 130 dB range. Full setup would still be under 7k or so IIRC. Spend the rest on good furniture and a great screen. I am a fan of SI's black diamond screen technology on the high end and Goo Systems paintable screens on the low end (can be painted over center channel speaker for great imaging.
4)Professional 3 chip DLP projector (Crystie makes a nice one)
McIntosh MC2k amps x7
McIntosh MX136
Lyngdorf room correction pre processor
DCs Scarletti audio source or Esoteric Rubidium clock/DAC/transport system
elpj laser turntable
Denon BluRay player
McIntosh XR2k speakers all the way around OR
MBL 101 X-treme OR
Kharma Grand Exquisite OR
Wilson Alexandria
Eminent Technologies TRW-17 infrasonic generator subwoofer
All systems would use Blue Jeans Cables for wiring. If you want to blow 300k dollars on helium lined, silver plated, carbon fiber cored, Buda blessed interconnects and speaker cables, be my guest. Me, I'll save 299,000 dollars and buy a TT Viper, GT, and still have money to build a few nice custom 1-offs.

Damn, you are fast. Compliments again. Are you going to Bradenton? If so, would love to pick your brain about my upcoming spending spree.
Where do you buy most of your component items? We are held captive by Best Buy and Ckt City with NO CHOICES for high end. Most often when searching high end, you always pay high end prices. Is there a better option out there? What is your favorite place to buy?
It looks like I have some homework to do due to your great answer. I'll check back with you in the near future.

I wish I could go to Bradenton, but it is right in the middle of school One more year and I should be able to make it down (maybe with a V10 something of my own!!).
Most of the things I buy are from the internet (Oppo is internet direct, as is Fluance, and I got my Sherwood on Ebay). However, when one wishes to listen to a good number of products, I find that driving 150-200 miles is not out of the question. I have had some good experiences at Stereo Barn, which is about 3 hours away from me IIRC. Find the nearest large city and see what they have. Feel free to call me. Just PM me if you want to talk.

You don't have any private home theater business around you? We have Sound Advice which is more upscale from Best Buy/Circuit City, but there are a few home theater only places that do insane work.
Greatly appreciate it. Will call you when when I get ready to start buying up some new gear. I have an old rear projection that is going to see the door for a new flat screen, but have been on the fence about my components. So, thanks.
BTW...for those of you who don't feel like googling my price-no-object system, the price would be well over 1 million dollars. In some cases, well over 2 (The Kharma Grand Exquisite is 220k/pair and I had 3 pairs in that system).
as I've said before, Sunfire is one of THE BEST bang for the buck for affordable high end stereo gear.
pre-amps, multi channel amps, home theater receivers, and god fearing awesome powered sub woofers.
I have several sunfire subs for sale (CHEAP less than half price of new), 8", 10" or 12" models 1500 watts to 2700 watts depending on the model. mine are lightly used, I just have too many of them and am downsizing, Its a crime to use them in my shop or garage.
PM me if anyone wants to buy a sub-woofer, shipping might cost a bit cuz they're HEAVY.
I just don't think there is that much margin in higher-end gear. I deal with Vienna Acoustics, Sonus Faber, Monitor Audio, etc. and if Linn has similar margins, that would be below the dealers cost.
Edit: Hmmm. I see how expensive that system is now. I'm sure there is a large margin, but I still doubt it's 50%.
dealer margins are over 60%. depends on which dealer and how much they buy. it is very tough times for high end stereo.
Didn't know that, I thought a lot of the high end stuff would have tighter margins. Good to know, I'm gonna wheel and deal next time...I want 40% off fuckers lol.
