Still more than what I expected. Does the widow of a dead soldier still get $10,000 from the government or has that been raised? That should be a more accurate government valuation of a life.
The $10k is just to help you get started with the burial arrangements. The standard life insurance policy for soldiers is like $250K for $10-$15 per month (at least it was when I retired in 2004).

You retired at th right time. I had to wait 4 more years . In combat, I believe it goes up to $400K.

What used to irk me about combat pay was that us married folks would lose our "Separate Rations" pay when we were deployed. So not only did we get shot at but we brought home a smaller paycheck to boot.
I think that's been fixed now though. At least I hope so.
