This is nothing more than Political Posturing to make it look like Congress is doing something about the high Gas prices. Maybe I am not reading the article right, but how does the United States expect to force other countries to abide by our Laws?
After our idiots screw everything up we'll be lucky to have any gas at all.
No, I'm pretty sure Bush has a master plan. Just wait. Like a grand master chess player, he is waiting for just the right moment to put that final piece in place.
So, they turn down Bush when he requested increased production in order to stabilize oil prices , and now we sue?
We will look like fools to the rest of the world.............

We have unfortunately looked like fools for a little while now. What scares me is how do we get out of this? This next election doesn't make me feel great. If the dems win, it would actually bring up over seas opinions of us in the short term but they are going to raise taxes and, I feel, make a bad situation in the middle east worse. What is McCain going to do? Start a war with Iran? He said he will get rid of the AMT which is good but is going to close off a lot of legitimate writeoffs. We are in a great country but in a whole mess of crap right now. I just hope that whoever wins really surprises us and turns out to be a star.

I can't see chess being his game. Maybe tiddlywinks, but certainly not chess.

whoever the President is, we are fucked...I wish I can run this country.I would do a few things that would be unfair but fuck it. I would drill in Alaska with taking every precaution not to fuck up the environment. At the same time I would isolate this country from the world for about a good 10 yrs.Close all boarders and let the Europeans take care of there own shit in there back yards.Enough of America being the cop of the world. I would pass odd and even numbers state wide. Depending on those numbers who drives for the day and who doesn't. Only energency vehicles and commercial allowed to drive any time. This would cut cost of gas and at the same time boost the economy with more people using mass transportation to get around.

I would realistically say it is physically impossible to massively increase oil rigging/drilling without environmental impacts. That aside, the question remains how the costs of enhancing the oil infrastructure and transportation alternatives in such a remote locale (more so than it already is) are offset by the anticipated lower costs of the end product. The end product in itself is also affected by the ability to refine, and now you have to offset the costs of increased refining capabilities for the increased crude production out of the north to compensate.
It's a catch-22 I think, but only in theory. I honestly don't know if studies have been done with an "end +/- $$ figure" as a result. I do understand, however, that there is more recoverable crude available in the Alberta oil sands than all of the middle eastern countries save Saudi Arabia.

We already do, I deal with investors overseas and they basically consider us a 3rd world country now (obviously were not) but its surprising how many look down upon us. A friend had his trust screwed up at Barclays and still working out what happened months later, and we have the email from one of the guys handling trust who sent an email to friends attorney that basically said "what the fuck is wrong with Americans always trying to rush, no wonder the world hates you. I'll handle it when I want to so fuck off". no joke, there was more sent but that was basically to sum it up (his rush thing was about friend already waiting a month with no answer).

True and sad...but they honestly have always looked down upon us. I think half is reality (we really do suck right now), and half is jealousy (Maybe not the right word, but you get the idea).
no capitalism does not equal price fixing. China and OPEC have been doing it for years.
Then oil needs to be controlled soley by the government, socialist style, instead of pseudo-socialist by threatening to sue and penalize companies who are so large they can't be expected to answer to anyone but their shareholders.
Price fixing is a great way to keep your shareholders happy over long term, and that is simply all they care about, not the government, economy, or their customers.

uhh, no, that is not thier intent. When companies collaborate and set fixed prices, it’s to remove competition and stabilize the market. Guaranteeing them a fixed piece of the profits by qty not price. They in effect remove free market competitive conditions. This is a violation of the fair trade act in the US, but not really enforceable to companies in other countries.

The first thing the gov't needs to do IMO is to remove Oil futures from the commodities market. That's why the prices are going thru the roof.
Second thing is to start freakin drilling here (Gulf and Alaska). Minimize the environmental impact, but ACCEPT the fact that it has to be done and it has to be done NOW!
I heard on the radio today that the world consumes 87 million barrels of oil per day. The total production of oil per day is 85 million barrels. You do the math.
And the most frightening thing I heard was that in 20 years China ALONE will be consuming 85 million barrels per day. It's going to get alot worse before it gets better.
