Being a broke college kid...sucks. A lot. You realize when you gotta sell the first car you bought to down grade to a piece of crap for the next 5 years how much you'll miss having a nicer car.
That being said, I'm indecisive as hell as to what to buy as well, so I figured I'd ask some fellow car nuts what their opinions are.
Requirements:
Leather Seats
4 Doors
Good on gas
Reliable/ less expensive to repair
Not a Honda civic.
Price range is up to $8500
Thanks for any and all legit input guys.
So far my thoughts are 00-01 Infiniti I30, 00-01 Acura CL type S coupe/4 door sedan (my 2 door exception), Nissan Maxima
College kid? Need absolute reliability? Want 35-38 mpg? Never need a shop? Good in snow? Well....forget leather seats, you want a Toyota Matrix and you can find a good one for less than 8k. Why? Hatch back and more storage room than you will believe...

Shit, and here I thought you were casting away all pride whatsoever. You consider those "beaters". I' consider them nice cars. My paint shedding '97 Lumina is a beater. But it cost $500, and I've worked over the engine to get 25 mpg city and 34+ Highway, while running 9's in the 1/8. It'll never be pretty, so I made it fun. Nothing like beating up on people with an ugly car.
Being as you're into the budget suit and tie crowd, look toward older BMW's, and some '90's Lexus cars to fill your "beater" need.

8,500 a beater? well FU lol I'd say stay away from anything made after 2000. Buy the kid a 1976 Buick Electra 225 with a buick 350. Might not get the best mileage, but in insurance and parts cost, it'll make it worthwhile. Plus he can pretend he's a pimp.
95-2000 town car, grand marquis, crown vic...you can find one with under 80k miles with leather for well under$8k. plus insurance will be cheap and you will get 20mpg average...25 on the highway. and you knwo they can handle 200k miles...limo companies know reliable cars!!!
2000-2002 Honda accord ex v6. The car just does not fall apart and when I was doing alot of traveling i never had one problem withe the car other than a flat every now and then. Just don't be an idiot and try to modify it. Ad a stereo and radar and leave it alone and just use it for what it is, RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION! And you can probably find a nice one for 6k. Hope this helps and I put close to 200,00 miles on mine
Look for a Gen 2 Lexus GS300 that has had the timing belt service.
Solid car.
Im in the same situation as the original poster. Are these things reliable up to 200K miles? The ones i'm seeing for sale are around the 100K mile range. Thanks.
Support domestic auto manufacturers, drive an import into the ditch
Drive youself in a ditch. Other than trucks I will not own a daily driven american car. Go drive a camry and a ford taurus and tell me which one you think will not make it over 100,000 miles. Lexus gs or accord is the way to go. Stay away from acura tl's and cl's as they are notorius for trans issues. Personally I'll stick with my 20 mpg anywhere diesel truck for everyday transportation.
And just to make you feel a little dumber, Most import cars are built here in American facilities which is probably the reason they are becoming less reliable.
