I'm going to cancun next week and want to know some good places to eat and drink. I've been there before, but I don't remember the names of the clubs or restraunts.
I suggest crossing the border into Belize and find my buddy Kurt Fischer. He owns a resort down there (can't remember the damn place) and knows just about everywhere to go. All I can say is, leave the camera at home. You don't need evidance following you home
rent a car for the day and get out of cancun. drive down to tulum and visit the ruins. make sure you go down to the beach for an hour, its one of the prettiest in the world. on your way back pull into a dirt road leading to a town called tankah, have lunch at casa cenote, ceviche and cerveza. go for a swim in their cenote right across the street.
drive a little closer to cancun and pull into the town puerta aventuras. have dinner at gringo daves. after dinner go to playa del carmen(closer to cancun) and have some drinks at any number of bars. hop in your car and head back to cancun.
note to self, when driving if you ever see a sign that reads 'tope' that means speed up. those little speed bumps are more for enjoyment.
if you are really adventuras, pack a lunch, leave early and drive down to xcalak. a small little town 7 miles from the belize border. rent a boat and snorkel or dive the chinchorro reef

As you said "I know most of the people on this site are well traveled and many have been to Mexico before............."
I'd hardly count Cancun as "mexico" other than yeah it's on the land there.
All depends on what you're looking for, but as others have suggested, get out of there as fast as you can unless you want 5000 room hotels and crowded beaches. Drive south as mentioned and soak up the Mayan ruins, better yet keep going south and go to Belize instead.......
I've gotten around a bit........as a scuba diver, I try to be a world traveler (not a tourist) and there's big difference.
ScubaDiver - Fiji (3x), New Zealand (2x), Belize (2x), Cozumel, Hawaii (2x), Roatan Honduras (2x), Costa Rica, where to next...?

i got married in mexico ten years ago. travel back twice a year. i have been searching for my perfect hideaway for years now and believe I have found it in mahuhaul/xcalak. the closest airport is cancun which is about 5 hours away. its an interesting drive to say the least filled with monkeys, cows and armed army checkpoints
If you want to party with a host of teenagers and need a Walmart or a Home Depot....stay in Cancun.
If you want to enjoy the beach, food and nightlife...stay in Playa.
