As I was going to St. Ives I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks, each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits: kits, cats, sacks and wives,
How many were going to St. Ives?

Yeah, that is supposed to be the answer but that never sat well with me. It is entirely possible that either the narrator or the man overtook the other and met going the same direction. Plus, I am sure that many were on the way to St. Ives on different routes or ahead or behind the route that the narrator is on. It is like saying, I counted 250 people on my flight to Chicago so 250 people are going there, discounting the 180 flights an hour going into O-hare and the clogged highway full of people driving in.
