Today I am going to rip off and throw away that tacky bench and remove the top rails to replace them. I'm also going to Home Depot to buy a belt sander and sand and restain the deck itself.
This project all started because my little 5 month old yorky jumper thru the spindles and hung herself off the side of the deck. Thank the lord she was wearing a harness and not a collar!!
I was at first just going to put window screen up but that looked really tacky, then I decided to add spindles in between the current spindles until I found the existing spindles were not 1 1/2 inches X 1 1/2 inches - the fucktards who originally built the deck cut 2 X 4's in half - and not very uniformly so I decided to replace the stained ones and then paint those to match the white side of the deck. But, as always, the project has gotten out of hand!!
I hope you got a good pair of knee pads cause a 3x21 belt sander will take you a very long time. Also, if any part of your deck is not straight, the belt sander will not work correctly. You may want to pick up a nice Random Orbital sander as well. It may even be worth it to see if they rent the large sanders that the hardwood floor refinishers use.

Good suggestion - but my thoughts...
I too, was thinking of renting a drum sander but am afraid I might ruin it if I hit any nails. Although I do intend to sink the nails into the deck 3/8" or so, I'm afraid that even one nail might escape me and I would be buying the rented drum sander.
I do have a random orbital sander and knee pads tho.
I'm thinking of buying the Dewalt Heavy-Duty 3" X 21" Variable Speed Belt Sander - DW433 since all the other tools I have are Dewalt as well. However, Home Depot does not have them in staock, althouth Lowes does so I think I will go there now that it has started to rain and look at dishwashers as well.
I would go with a porter cable belt sander myself. I am sure the Dewalt one is good, but Porter Cable makes some of the best sanders. This is coming from a professional furniture builder.
