I have been on the fence over the last year or so about whether HD-DVD or Blu-Ray would be the better choice. With Blu-Ray emerging as the victor, I went out and bought a Sony player this weekend.
I have it hooked up to a 1080p Philips LCD via HDMI. I watched "Good Luck Chuck" the other night, and it was crystal clear. We watched a movie last night, and it really didn't look much better than a standard DVD. I've got the output setting on the player set on "auto", which means it should have an output signal of 1080p.
Is that just the way it is with these high-def DVD's? Will some look great and others look...meh?
I was in Sears a few weeks ago. They had a Blu-Ray playing on a Samsung 1080p Plasma. The movie was one of the Pirates of the Carribean series and it was so freaking clear it looked like I was watching real life through a window. I was amazed and I've been watching HDTV for 5-years now!

Kudos to Sony home entertainment..........an early Blu-ray version of "The 5th Element" was so poorly mastered and people complained so much, they actually remastered a new Blu-ray and offered a free replacement if you sent in your origional copy.
Yes, you have to watch the "quality" of the copy.
Blu-ray is amazing, Buy a copy of "Planet Earth", or "The Blue Planet". All shot in IMAX I believe and awesome nature videos of our big blue marble.

Planet Earth was a big reason why I bought a high def system. I needed to do some research for a sequence I was working on and didn't want to buy any more standard def dvds. The BluRay Planet Earth is just amazing. If you have HD or BluRay, go out and buy it now.
Cool - I got a BluRay player for $200 when we bought our Samsung plasma in the fall. I absolutely LOVE the TV and watching hi Def movies is amazing. I do want to get Planet Earth - thanks for confirming that it's awesome.
I bought a copy as a Christmas gift at Costco so they should have it, or at least do from time to time. You can always try their website. I bought my copy on Amazon and it wasn't that much more.
Really though, at $24.99 a disc they can kiss my ass. And they also have the nerve to load them up with commercials, some of which you can't skip over.
Got a 60G PS3 a couple of months ago and I have it hooked up to my old-ass rear projection circa 1995 TV. Can't comment on the quality due to the fact the television lacks component/HDMI inputs, so I am stuck in 480 world right now.
I have been getting all of my shit for my HT together and am going to make the move to digital projection (1080p) in a few weeks. Can't wait to get my subs in. The law will be called when I am done.
