My wife was in first class on a flight from Atlanta to Minneapolis this week when the flight attendant announced that there were two soldiers returning home on Iraq on the flight and asked if anyone in first class would give up their seat for them. After none of the men in first class offered to do so, my wife and another woman gave up their seats in first class.
What the fuck is that? I would be willing to bet that most of the men in first class were supporters of the war in Iraq (my wife is not) but they would not really show support for our troops when they had the opportunity if it meant an inconvenience to themselves. That really sucks.
My wife has never supported the Iraq war but does support our troops and was willing to give up her seat to a soldier even if it meant sitting center seat in coach on a two hour flight.

I hardly ever traveled in uniform but the few times I did, I got a seat in first class if there were empty ones. I have never heard of the attendants asking anyone to give up their seat though, thats news to me.
Maybe that did serve the meals yet and they were hungry. The meals in First class are much better.
+1 on never hearing of them asking to give up seats.
It actually sounds weird that they would even take the seats from someone. If I was a returning vet, I would not be asking someone to give up their seat. If anything, Uncle Sam should have bought them a first class seat.

Very cool of you wife to do that. Women are just more generous naturally. Shame on you men
Every once in awhile I get a first class ticket-upgrade not bought. If I see a soldier in uniform, I offer them my seat. I have found that they generally refuse to change seats with me.
Bigger question: If the airline is interested in honoring soldiers in uniform, how come *they* don't give the soldiers first class seats to begin with?
