I’ve been having this stiff neck problem that has been leaving me with these annoying headaches. Sometimes bad, sometimes just “there”. I’m debating getting a deep-tissue massage from our fitness facility or going to a chiropractor. Its been a while, but after an accident I thought one helped – but people I know seem to think its “crack pot” medicine.
I’ve never gotten one of these deep-tissue massages, but my wife swears by them.
Anyone have any experience with either – I’m sick of these damn headaches.
I had this damned pinched nerve in my leg last summer that lasted for 3 weeks. I was at the end of my rope and someone recommended a chiroprator. I went and it didn't do shit to help me. Then I read all kinds of bad shit about chiropractors on the web.
Some things really scared me, like the fact that when they crack your neck there is a slight chance you could get a stroke from your artery rubbing against your bones or something. They had a story about one young 20 something healthy chick that went to the chiropractor, he cracked her neck like they all do, and she had a stroke and died right there. Scary stuff, I never went again after I read that. I think it is all a damn scam, like the snake oil peddlers from 100 years ago.
I've been going to a Chiropractor for years. Not constantly, just when nessesary. He's saved me on more than one occation.I believe in them,if you get a good one.
Chiropactic (?) is quack medicine. It doesn't require any sort of real medicine degree, so it's right up there with the other similar fields. The funniest thing is ANY chiropractor will tell you that you're going to need to go back to see them many times - without fail they say that.
I'd go for a massage - I don't think it will do anything medicinal, but it will probably make you feel better.
Sorry to say, most the chiropracters I've come across have been quacks. They're like therapists - they can only "help" you if you see them once a week for the rest of your life, hehe.
Go with the message, and spring for the happy ending - your headache will be gone, at least for a little while
Having been to both, i would suggest a massage first. If the pain is due to deep muscle injury, then increasing blood flow to the area is important. A professional should be able to find the area of the cervical spine that is injured.
Be very, very careful of chriopractors. There ARE some good ones out there who really know their stuff and can do you some good -- but start with real doctors first. I wrote medical software for about five years, and we dealt heavily with chriopractors. I got to see the inner workings and detailed history of nearly 400 practices, most with multiple doctors on staff, covering surgeons, chiro, shrinks, eye doctors, you name it. Everything except dentistry (the paperwork is very different).
Offhand I'd say about 1 in 10 chiropractors are trustworthy by my standards. That means they don't string people along for "care" they don't really need, they aren't cheating on insurance, and they aren't using any of that fishy equipment that only chriopractors seem to love.
Much of what a chiropractor does should have nearly immediate results. If you decide to give them a try, if after a few visits you aren't seeing real results, reconsider. I'm not saying they can or should FIX things immediately, but what they do is very direct -- they move around bones and muscles. It shouldn't take long for results to be detectable.
Personally I'd go see an osteopath first in almost all cases where chiropractic is being considered, although in your case a physical therapist might also be a good choice.
DOs can perform all the "manipulations" that chiropractors do, but they have all the real training (and testing!) required of "regular" full-blown medical doctors. My personal doctor is a DO and we've talked about this to a great extent. (I actually selected him based on knowing his accounts-recievable history rather intimately, as his office was our beta-test site... can't argue with inside info like that as a basis for choosing your doc...)
Instead of wasting your money at a chiropractor, why don't you see a Voo-doo doctor instead. At least you will get a nifty doll in your image. I think most offices are in Haiti.
since im a chiropractic physician, heres my humble opinion(s);
first of all, ive nine yrs of schooling and two degrees
second; i take part in running a spinal-surgical center/ER with two spinal surgeons, an slew of orthopedic surgeon, a physiatrist, three anesthesiologists, LPTs and LMTs, etc.
as for respect smokey; in my element i command it, i demand it, and you damn well better fucking believe i get it; all because i earned it, period
if you look at the core curriculum of todays chiro schooling it surpasses the medical curriculum in many categories as far as hour requirements go; including but not limited to; orthopedics, neuromusculoskeletal diagnosis, anatomy and physiology and many others. dont believe me, let me know and ill email you a comparrison study done nationwide.
as for quackery; it exists in ALL fields of healthcare including my own. find a good doc and stick with him or her. hell; our ER doc we just fired, misdiagnosed a simple fucking fracture, good thing i reviewed the xrays to cover his ass, but ohh wait i forgot, im not a real doctor, LMFAO
everyone is entitled to opinions cause like assholes, everyone has one but, dont talk about shit you have not a clue on or your not educated properly in, cause simply put, youll look like a dickhead
as for strokes; bullshit and more bullshit. a competent chiro will never cause a stroke. most studies done on CVAs induced by "manipulation" of the cevical spine were in fact not done by chiros but were in fact done by PTs (not qualified) MDs (not qualified) LMTs (not qualified) and even DOs (barely qualified) oh, and the few that were also done by the bankofdumbshits patients who go home and say, "hey honey my neck hurts will you do what the doc does so i dont have to go in for an appointment"
you want to know more, email me if you prefer to remain uneducated, dont email me.
bottom line is all docs have a scope of practice, if you stick within your scope you do well and help most who seek you out, if you go outside of your scope, you fuck up and give a bad name to all.
my scope is musculoskeletal and im as good as it gets and i know it, thats why i work with a team of specialists from ER to spinal surgery, from profesional athletes to the International Olympic Committee
BTW, dont think the above comments in any way offended me; i take it as a personal duty to educate the uneducated when it comes to healthcare. now, if you said something about me personally, I could give a fuck, LOL
:fist:
BTW since im a quack, does that mean im no longer allwoed to play in any viper club games
one last point of fact; most DO's in my area send all patients requiring cervical spine manipulation to me. why; because a DO is not as qualified in manipulation. (i also see most of the same referring docs as patients too, LOL)
Packet, I had a bad experience with a chiro. Cracked my neck (it literally went POP loud!) at first my lower back pain went away, but 30 minutes later I had horrbile headaches and then migraines tha
