So, I've been thinking of ways we can avoid the whole "banning poll" thing prematurely. And I came up with a "three strikes, your out" idea which the Admin can add to a users account (strikes can be given out by moderators and recommended by users individually to moderators and would be assigned based on the board rules).
"Strikes" would appear as an icon under a username in each post. Three Strikes and you get a 30-day instant-ban. Subsequent violations can result in a banning poll.
IF this process is adopted I think it should be a "strike" poll each time that runs for at least 24 hours. Each strike constitutes a 7 day ban. 3rd time gone forever and its a 3 day poll for the last one. Hows that sound? Cant be abused this way...members can also make the standard motion for a perma-ban with a 3 day poll. I think members should have the option.
Im not jumping in on a "banning wagon" because I dont see bannings here as the same as the morgue bannings. Over there there were the "hiddens" did all the bannings. Over here the bannings are the WILL OF THE MEMBERS. NO MODERATOR does a thing but put up a poll and hit the button depending on the outcome of the poll. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. We arent doing anything that at least 2/3rds of the members want. Completely different than some over zealous southern baptist with a nerd inferiority complex hiding behind his comptuer screen with a bullshit windbreaker nazi style liberal agenda. What I advocate is keeping as MUCH POWER WITH THE MEMBERS AS POSSIBLE and AS LITTLE GIVEN TO THE MODS AS POSSIBLE.
IMO - you pretty much know who is trolling here - right? When you get people like Rythem, etc... There is the occasional mad-man coming in and spewing stuff - but who cares... You know who they are - if all they provide is BS and trouble - send them a FU memo...

Those are my thoughts exactly. The members dont need a rule that says a moderator needs to give someone "X" number of strikes before they have the RIGHT to ban someone. The members should have the right to do this as a collective body. IMO I believe we have been fair in the past...and bannings have failed when there was not a 2/3rds majority.
Except maybe when a moderator calls for a banning poll after a user has made only one post. Since when did Banning Polls become the FIRST option in dealing with trolls or problem users?
