I believe the Westin was the best place to stay at in Lahaina.
I stayed at the Marriott which wasn't a bad place either, but the Westin next door had a much nicer pool.
There was also a golf course across the street from the hotels.
The strip there with the hotels is pretty cool with a beach area down the end called black rock where you can scub or snorkel in the reef that juts out.
There is also a little upscale shopping plaza right in the middle of the hotels called Whalers Village that has some good restaurants, and some upscale stores.
If you head south of the area, you will hit a decent sized mall and a little further south of that is a downtown area with outdoor shops, restaurants, and bars.

If the co-workers are dating and want a nice quiet/romantic place, the wife and I stayed at the Four Seasons, and it was fantastic - but it's at the South end of the Island kind of secluded from most malls/shops/hotels.
If they are a couple of guys, and are going over there looking for poon, then yes, to the North would be better. However, Maui isn't really 'hopping'. It's much quieter than Oahu (and the big island from what I hear). Seemed to me like things close up early on Maui.
That's the one I was thinking of. I will have to edit my post.
I'm thinking of the Sheraton in Oahu.
Don't foget to take the suicide road to the North of the hotels. When you get up there there will be a little house up on the left with an old guy selling fresh fruit that he grows.
Tell him Big Mike said to give you some fresh pineapple.

But it is real nice.
I couldn't agree more! The wife and I stayed there a couple of years ago. The service was fantastic. Its not cheap but well worth the extra coin. Mike, did you happen to try the lobster sandwiches at the pool restaurant? Those damn things were loaded about an inch thick! Probably the only 20.00 sandwich I ever had that was actually worth it!!
