I am tired of becoming a fat bastard. And am now willing to change. Never tried a diet in my life. I have always played sports and or worked out hard enough to where it didn't matter what I ate or drank.
Since being married last october I have found myself not playing sports. Not working out like I used to. And the river has been so shitty all Spring and Summer I have not even had my stand up jet ski daily work out.
So I have heard that this Adkins diet thing is a good way to go. Especially considerig that my doctor told me that if I kept drinking and eating like I have that I was a possible case for a future Diabetic. That thought scares me.
Have any of you tried this diet? Had any success? I had my wife read the book last night and I started yesterday.
The Atkins diet will kill you IMO. You cant maintain that and you will yo-yo back to your current state or worse when you stop. The only way is to eat in moderation and exercise at least 30 minutes a day 3-4 times a week. Its a good start and its a lifestyle change. Go for it, you wont regret it. Just dont expect instant results, and remember dedication pays off in the long run (as in anything in life).
Adkins is bad if you are hypo glycemic or diabetic in any way. It is also hard to keep the weight off once you transition back to normality.
Try the Zone diet by a guy named Sears. Balances protien and carbs.
Or if you are wanting to work out quickly and effeciently, Body for Life by Bill Phillips. (workouts and nutrition.
Did you even TELL him you were considering doing the Adkins?? Most doctors assume you will be exercising and eating a balanced diet when they tell you to lose weight.
there is no "fast and easy" way to lose weight and keep it off. Every get lean fast gimmic is just bait for the lazy man who is going to end up fat again. Just bite the bullet do it the right way and call it good. Cut back on the fat, cut back on the carbos and cut back in your total caloric intake. Break your meals into eating 5-6 times a day. Smaller meals spread out over time increases your metabolism. Do 30-40 minutes of cardio a couple times a week. Keep your heart rate at least 140-150 the whole time. Do some resistance training to increase your body's lean mass. Both these activities will lend towards increasing your metabolism. Keep this up for a couple of months and you will see a big difference, youll feel better, the weight will stay off, and you will be healthier. With any luck it will be a habit you enjoy.
When I work out I primarilly use free weights. Although I always pop right back into shape Im not sure if Im getting the cardio workout I need.
After playing Rugby for four years for UK I can not jog. Multiple knee injuries have put an end to that.
I can cut beer out but I will have to replace it with Makers and Woodford.
I guess I can start riding bikes again for the cardio part.
I am very concerned about the blood sugar thing. That and the cholestrol count.
The adkins thing allows me to eat lots of steak and fish. Both of which I love. So that is one of the main things I liked about it.
The ONLY thing that works over the LONG run is changing your life style.
Do it slowly and consistently.
Diet: Cut out fast food, sodas and fried foods. Eat more grilled foods and vegetables, cut back on the sauces and dressings. Eating at home more often - this way you control what goes in and on your food. Restaurants are out to make the best tasting food and thus add tons of oil and butter on foods.
Exercise regularly with a variety of exercises - hit the gym, run, swim, play basketball or anything active that you enjoy at least 30 min 4-5 times a week. Make it a routine - either immediately before or after work. Once you get home there will be a million and one reasons to skip the exercise.
It will also help if your wife is supportive and changes her diet and exercises with you - at least on the weekends.
My main problem is fast food..... I eat it Every single day. Sometimes twice a day.
I only eat fast food 3-4 times a YEAR. Bring your lunch to work when possible - I go home for lunch - if not try to eat Subway (no cheese or mayo) or hit a salad bar with non-fat dressing.

Have to agree. I've tried it and lost about 15 lbs pretty damn quick. Problem was that I gained it back almost instantly. So why didn't I stay on it you ask? I'm a carnivore and yet you have no idea how much I came to loathe meat after 6 wks on that thing. I wasn't craving pasta and potatoes so much as just wanted to eat anything but meat.
It does have some interesting lessons to teach though. It proved to me that carbs really are the work of the devil. I never would have believed you could lose weight by pounding down meat and eggs all day, but by God you really do. It's just impossible to maintain IMO. Exercise is the key, I'm afraid. For those of us who have no time in their lives for gyms, that's a bitch. And don't gimme any shit about how I have to make time. Walk 24 hrs in my shoes then tell me that. I wish I could find time to lift weights again ... I used to love doing that.
Red5 - Get a treadmill or go the gym, or even walk around your block a few times. Just keep going at it for at least a half hour. Walk, do not run. I do this at least 4 times a week and half been for the last 1.5 years. I am at the point where I feel lazy if I don't go to the gym at least 1 time a day (normally I go 2 times - 1 for cardio and the other for weights). If you are concerned about wieght, just do cardio at least once a day. The best thing to do is in the morning before you eat anything. Set goals to where in a few months or so, you are walking an hour at a time and at a elevation. Good luck!
ANY diet requires a lifestyle change - because if you didn't change, you'd be eating the same stuff, hence you'd still be fat. That much is obvious.
I will have to go with Biggs and recommend the Zone diet. Atkins is good and works well, and contrary to belief, does not automatically mean high-cholesterol (often it's lower), but with Atkins, you must VERY carefully monitor carbs or you will put it all back on.
As for "eat less and exercise". That's like telling a drug addict just to stop doing drugs. Yes, it will work, but I don't think many people can spend their life being hungry 24/7. The trick is to
1) Reduce your food intake... not drastically cut it, but you should NEVER feel "stuffed"
2) MONITOR WHAT AND WHEN YOU EAT! Don't eat alot of food late in the day or night - try to eat a good breakfast, a late lunch, and a smallish but sensible dinner. Skipping breakfast, pigging at lunch, then pigging at 9pm for dinner is bad.
3) Get family and friends to help you. if everyone around you is going out to eat and sucking down burgers, it's hard to be sitting in the corner munching on a slice of melon and drinking water.
Smokin's got the right approach. It's a lifestyle change with a balanced diet and regular exercise. Start building your routine gradually over time so the changes aren't so drastic as to discourage you. Try packing a balanced lunch a couple days a week to start. Maybe hit the gym every 5th day. Work up to a plan where you eat 5-6 smaller meals a day and work out 3-5 times a week regularly. Also slowly cut out the sodas, caffine, and fast food. As you begin eating healthier on a more regular basis you will crave fast food less and less. I rarely eat out at this point. Maybe once or twice a week.
Now if you just want the pounds to FLY off and forcibly make you soley eat bread and rice, might I suggest a nice bout with E-coli. That took 20 lbs. off my svelt 135lb frame and pretty much removed meat and diary from my diet for 8 months. It felt like I was in hell and I thought I'd never be able to eat normal food again. Alas, I beat the bitch and am back to my stout 5'10" 135lb self again.
Im a late night eater. I usually have dinner between 9-11 pm. Than I usually stop by the fridge at least once at night.
like I said, my usualy resolve to all of this is to nail the weights hard and do a lot of jet ski riding and swimming. But my doctor told me that excersize alone wasn't going to cut it. For what its worth i think mydoctor is an idiot. I did some financing for him and sort of inherited him. he doesn't really pay atention and I think perhaps I should speak with someone else.
I have seen people have to give themselves insuline shots before and I don't want to ever let things go that far. It is odd that I can retain a good amount of physical strenth and still have screwed up sugar/cholest stuff. I always thought that as long as you stay strong then your body will take care of itself.
For now i will stick to steak, eggs and fish.... Lots of water. and Burboun.
Should be very interesting because tom I have to go on active for the weekend patrolling the hydroplane races...And I know what food they are going to send us in the boats, and it is NOT going to be in the allowed area for this Adkins thing.
