Ron, there is not a Charger fan around that would not agree that trading Eli for Rivers and the draft pick that got us Merriman was the best deal in sports. Now the worst deal was Ryan Leaf.
Oh god Ryan Leaf is by far the worst evar, in every aspect
Merriman was a hell of a nice surprise for SD, he's up there in Urlacher's class. Let's hope he keeps it up after stopping the steroid use.
I don't think Sanders style of running would of suited the frozen tundra as opposed to the carpet in the Silverdome
You may just be right. I went to what at the time was the first Packer home playoff game in like 20 years back in 1994 or so and the Packers held Barry Sanders to -1 yards on the frozen tundra. Rumor has it the Packers flooded the field the day before the game to make sure it lived up to the "frozen tundra" of legend.

Yep, STUPENDOUS trade. I don'think Eli is washed up by any means but he's sure not playing like Rivers and y'all got Merriman to boot? I'd say that was a pretty slick move!
Ryan Leaf is an asst. coach at a small college here in West Texas. The interview I saw made him seem like a pretty decent guy. Even he thought he was over-hyped. He just didn't know how badly over-hyped until he got there. He also admitted to being a jerk but said that was immaturity running his mouth and if he had it to do over again, he would have kept his mouth shut. All in all, I kind of felt sorry for him and wish him luck. Having said that, he was definitely a big-time bust in the NFL.
"A decade before the epic failure of Ryan Leaf, Mandarich was largely considered to be the biggest bust of any draft pick in American football history."
"Drafted as an offensive linesman, Mandarich never lived up to the very high expectations set for him, and spent most of his first year on the Packers on special teams after a lengthy holdout that only got settled the last week before the regular season. He was also known for having attitude issues, and after three seasons of lackluster performance on a four-year contract, Mandarich was cut by the Packers."

I know most of you could care less about hockey but talking about bad draft years, a buddy of mine was drafted into the NHL in 1989.
These players were drafted ahead of him:
#2: Dave Chyzowski
#6: Adam Bennett
#8: Jason Herter
#12: Rob Pearson
#13: Lindsay Vallis
#15: Jason Soules
#17: Shayne Stevenson
#18: Jason Miller
#21: Steve Bancroft
None really accomplished anything.
On the other side of the coin, in that same draft was Niklas Lidstrom (#53 by Detroit), Sergei Fedorov (#74 by Detroit), and Pavel Bure (#113 by Vancouver).
I imagine the Islanders scouts that picked Dave Chyzowski #2 overall may want a mulligan on that one.

Mandarich was picked 2nd. That was just rediculous. He actually started for the Colts for 3 or 4 years if I remember correctly. Not worthy of a 2nd pick, but respectable for a NFL career.
I remember the Bears looking at him. But they had their own problems on the way with Alonson Spellman! Remember that Big Som' Bitch. Bipolar disorder change him. What a story.
I expected Dexter Manley to be able to write his own name and lay off the drugs after failing his fourth failed drug test and suspension from the NFL. He didn't quite live up to my expectations.

Rickie Williams. Drafted out of Texas, makes bonehead move #1 by telling the saints to not pay him a huge contract, but to pay him based on his playing. Screws himself outta millions. Then, they trade him to the dolphins, where he starts to play his ass off, but cant pass a damn drug test. Leaves the NFL to live in a tent for a couple years, comes back, and STILL cant pass a drug test. uughh.....
Great running back out of Penn State, was there with Kerry Collins.
2nd in Heisman voting 1994.
Is not under contract with the NFL, last played for Saints and had 17 rushing yards.......
1st overall pick in the 1995 NFL draft.
Carter tore his ACL in a pre-season game his rookie season. He never recovered. Not sure I would consider that a big bust. More like bad luck.
Someone mentioned Len Bias. That was more bad luck. You can't be a bust if you die before ever playing a game. Bias was a sick baller, and joining a team like the '86 Celtics wasn't going to hurt his career. He might have overshadowed even MJ in the late '80s.
My biggest bust ever? Dan of "Dan & Dave". Dude was the highlight of 9 months of Reebok commercials and then failed to even qualify for the Olympics. At least Ryan Leaf actually played on the world's biggest stage in his respective sport.
