This desktop is a Gateway Desktop P4 3.06 GHz with 4X AGP, Half Gig RAM. I think its time to update it to a new Mobo that has a greater FSB with more RAM and PCI Express.

Thanks again Andy,

Hmm Im not sure how gateway does things anymore but when I had one 6 years ago the mobos were not proprietary to the case. If that is still the case finding a new board will be easy, if not you most likely will have to get a new case also.
IMO I would get a decent agp graphics card and wait it out until Vista and the DirectX 10 cards are released. There is no point in doing an overhaul now if you dont have to. Thats what I did, I went from the FX5600 to the X1600 pro, that card will hold me over until i get ready to build a DirectX 10 ready rig.
What is the FSB on the mobo? and are you sure that is only a 4x agp slot?

the best cards out as of right now would be the BFG 7900 gtx OC by nvidia w/ 512 ram.
i am running currently running 2 of these in SLI mode. i would suggest that you upgrade to an SLI capable motherboard, preferably ASUS.
might run you a little over $300 but it is well worth it. i got mine from ZipZoomFly

The 7950 will outrun a 7900. The problem with the GeForce cards is that while they may be great for games, they fall short in 3d applications. For 3d stuff, look at the quadras, but they will cost you more.

I'm actually not sure. as the CPU is a 3.06 P4 yet its running 512MB PC1066 1066MHz . However, I think the FSB is 533. I'm almost positive the AGP is a 4x. The machine was purched in 2003

DDR or DDR2 for the memory? I cant remember when DDR2 was released. Off the top of my head I have no way of telling you how to check how fast the agp slot is. If it is a 4x slot there is no sense in getting a top of the line card.

ah ya bastard, go ahead and rub it in! those damn cards came out 3 weeks after i bought mine! i'm not sure if they got 2 of them to work well in SLI yet though.
