Hey, if you say you are going to sponsor a 10 year old girls hockey team, and make a big production out of it in front of other people, don't then renege on the deal later on when other people aren't around.
That has happened twice to me in trying to get a sponsor for my daughter's hockey team. A big song and dance about how "I'll sponsor the team, I'm a big shot". Then later "Sorry, we are cutting back on corporate sponsorship allowances"
Also, in business, you aren't "high end" simply because you say you are. That comes from years of establishing yourself in that market. It isn't a bad thing being in a lower end market, that is okay. Just don't waste your sales reps' time by going on and on about how you have reinvented the wheel and taken the business to a whole new level when you haven't.
Man, what a fucking frustrating day.....

Who was what? The companies that reneged on their word or the team my daughter plays for?
Either way, my daughter doesn't play in the NHL and it wasn't the NHL that said in a big meeting with other people that they would sponsor, so everyone clapped and gave them a round of applause, and then later with no one around they reneged.
I hear ya GC!
I spend the entire year trying to get donations for our FFA chapter and my greyhound rescue group.
People have this old fashioned idea that the FFA is just for farm kids raising animals. That is only just a part of it. The kids compete in public speaking, radio scripts, landscape design, floral design, entomology, job interviewing, welding, electrical wiring, building, all kinds of real life skills that can help them in the future.
That's it PBG, and the thing is, it doesn't matter if it is a girls rep hockey team, FFA and Greyhound Group kids, SPCA, Habitat for Humanity....whatever.
If you don't want to become a sponsor, then don't say you will become one. I certainly don't sponsor everything I'm asked for, nor do I tell people I will. But when I say I'm going to become a sponsor, especially something like a team sponsor which is around $1500 for my daughters team, then I follow through on it.
What really bugs me is both parties that said they would, made a big production out of it at a meeting. One of the people called her husband (who owns a local company) on her cell phone and made a big production so the whole room would hear that they will sponsor the team. I gave a little speach thanking her, the whole thing.
Then she tells me 4 weeks later that they aren't, so I'm back to square one.

That just plain sucks! If something came up, and they couldn't meet the agreement, they should have at least tried to find someone else to help out. I HATE it when your break your neck trying to help out kids (or dogs)and you don't get results. I understand that companies can't donate to every cause that asks, but when you see other groups make out like a bandit it's really frustrating!
I was being sarcastic. I knew the reneging company wouldn't be the NHL because like all professional sports franchises they just take and take and never give back anything near what they extort from a community.
I remember when a Tampa little league football team was crying to the community about needing $9K. Warren Dipshit Sapp pays more than that in monthly child support, the NFL would never even miss 9k out of their 10 billion annual revenue, but the community was expected to come up with the money.
Sorry kiddies. If professional sports is such a boon to a community then go to them for the cash.
But closer to topic, I feel your pain GC. It sucks when a company backs out like that.
I agree Chuck, the cash calls for these pro teams is a little tough to take when the players themselves make more per day than what Johnny Big Fan makes in a year.
The biggest scam which I still can't believe hasn't been investigated was the local place where the Blue Jays play.
The 'Rogers Center' used to be called the SkyDome. The SkyDome was hyped to the city of Toronto and the province and the taxpayers money came rolling in.
The building cost $580 million US to build.
It sold in 2004 for $25 million!! That year, Carlos Delgado made almost that much in his base salary.
I guess regarding my own situation I just put too much faith in people. A handshake, an announcement to a room that they will sponsor the team. Doesn't that shit mean anything any more?

It sucks when people commit to sponsoring a kid's sports team and backs out, sucks even more when he tries to play the hero in front of others. But it really sucks for the kids who need someone to pay for dues, uniforms, ect. so they can play. For years I sponsered 2 kid's soccer teams cause others backed out.
