This just pisses me off. In our old neighborhood, instead of people parking in the driveway or garage (all to full of shit) they park up and down the street. So to protect the kids they put in speed humps. Not bumps, more like mounds-fun with the low cars.
Now, when I was a kid, my parents did not let me play in the street. I got to play with my friends in the back yard in the fence. Why has the street become the play area?

You're right, it is much easier to farm your kids over to someone elses yard..... but I prefer to keep an eye on my own kids.

Or are they frightened by your waving your cane and calling them a bunch of young whippersnappers?

If I even suspect that kids even live in a particular neighborhood it's the speed limit or 10 below for me and I could care less that the people behind me are irritated. Nothing is more important to me than kids and their well being. It is the one topic where I'll get all Liberal and stuff because the more laws and government interventions to make them safe is fine by me. If the CHP wants to give tickets for 30 in a 25 in a residential neighborhood I'm cool with that. They're usually wasting their time giving tickets to folks doing 90 on I-5 (the great California Autobahn) anyways.

How about the expectation that people will drive safety according to conditions; that seems reasonable.

I have to say it is more than just people driving right. There is a responsibility with parents to protect the children. Even someone who is driving 25 in a neighborhood-normal speed around here, that can do some serious damage to a kid if they are allowed to play in the street or around parked cars on the edge of the street.
My point is, it is not fare to point the finger at the driver who is on the road when kids are using the street like a playground.
I can't remember whose neighbor it is that puts that sign in the middle of the road, be sure I would mow that over for him.
I know kids can slip away in an instant, so why not put them in the back yard to play and put a fence to keep them in and safe?
If I had kids, be damn sure that is what I would do to protect my kids.

All valid points ... but kids can't ride bikes, skateboards, roller skate, or play any type of bouncy-ball game in a grassy backyard. Many parents don't even have a backyard suitable for the purpose. Try keeping kids cooped up in a backyard and they'll make ya crazy.

I've raised a daughter and two step-sons and they learned from a young age that if they played carelessly (not paying attention, getting cocky with traffic, etc) in the street, they'd get hit by a car. They learned that pedestrians may have the right-of-way, but that fact makes no difference when they're lying in a bodycast from assuming that the driver of a car is on their side. Likewise, I've chewed ass on many a speeding fool in my day, and am always happy to see cops do periodic speed traps in residential area where it's a problem.

It's up to everyone to be safe for themselves as well as for others in my opinion.

Like I said; if I were the kind of person to put out cones (I prefer to use my Excursion/Expedition), then they'd probably have a cement block inside to fuck up your car the next time your drove over it.

It's attitudes like this that demonstrates that its not just kids that need a smack now and then.

Now, now, it is starting to sound like a little league baseball game around here with the smacking of me. I was never-never allowed to play in the street. I guess I was lucky, my parents thought it was important since they had a kid to get a house with a yard. We had a detached garage in the back so the driveway ran through. When I was little I was allowed to ride my bike, play bouncy ball and everything else safe in my back yard under the watchful eye of my parents.
So, excuse me if I don't think the street is a playground. Pretty sure if that was the intended purpose, I would not be allowed to drive on it.
Now, back to the neighbor and the cement in the cone/sign-I don't think he really wants to explain how it is he placed something in the road to intentionally cause damage to cars-lets remember this is the street we are talking about.
