I beg to differ PJ. Every kid could use an occasional swat on the ass. And they WILL learn.

At some point in my life long before I remember, I learned to fear my dad and my older brother. I'm sure some minor asscheek pain had something to do with it.

Yes, I remember the days of yelling "CAR!" I actually like hearing that sound because it tells me the kids know to get the fuck outta the road. Sure we played in the streets, got yelled at by grown ups, got chased like ever other kid. But that happens with older kids and sometime earlier in our/their lives we/they learned the roads were for cars. We didn't have parents sitting on the front lawn approving of our street playing by putting "child at play" signs on the street. If I ever see one of those again I'm gonna run over it then call the cops and have the parent ticketed for endangering motorists by placing obstructions in the road.

Yep.

Don't worry about it - kids are being kids. It isn't going to make you any later or take up much of your time to just slow down and let them let you pass. They are probably looking at you like you are an asshole because you are acting like one - try being a little patient and waving as you go by and once the kids don't think of you as the asshole down the street, they won't cop an attitude.

Streets are not just for cars, so get over it and be a good neighbor.

Correct. They are for motorcycles and bicycles too.

They are not for walking, jogging or playing spin the bottle.

I won't say I disagree, my kids get swatted from time to time; but fear is not my goal.

Then, like me, you probably also reached a point where the pain wasn't that bad and, honestly, didn't have much of an impact. I liked it much better when my Dad took the belt to me, but take away my allowance, that really sucked.

Maybe someday you will be blessed with kids, Chuck, and you can put all this wisdom to the test. I sincerely hope you get that opportunity because it'll change your life and, most likely, change your views. Because smacking a child around or teaching them to fear you will not be the first thing that comes to mind as you watch them setup for a simple game out in front of your house.

Is the reason due to the lack of supervision of an ignorant, or the effect of the lifestyle of parents being so busy? In most of our childhoods, our mothers didn't work. Today both parents need to work to survive.

This doesn't mean it's ok for a child to play in the streets. Isn't that why parks were built, with playgrounds? Then we have to worry of the creaps and pedophiles.....

Stop signs? Forget it, they only serve to slow people down (if they bother) should they notice other cars around, but if you are walking and maybe crossing you really need to wait to see if they will stop.

Speed bumps are a royal pain in the ass - especially on cars like Vipers; but the it's people who could careless that they are flying by houses with little children playing outside that are the real problem. I've had my fair share of run-ins with people who think that just because they are in a rush they are entitled to drive however they please.

When we first moved to this neighborhood all the Osamas drove like they were packing explosives and trying to run some barrier. A couple afternoons of me screaming in their faces got them to slow down and it's stuck; but it shouldn't take threats and intimidation to get people to slow down.

I don't always agree with you P.J. but I have to go with you on this one! My daughter was hit in our yard when we lived 1 home away from a dead end road and the person decided to run into the yards rather than run off into the trees at the end of the street. When I arrived my daughter had already been taken to the hospital but the person was still there with the police. They were going to arrest me for dragging the person out of the car to beat them senseless. My daughter ended up with some stitches and broken hip. She is 15 and fine now.

Maybe the kids aren't playing in the street but could be doing something as simple as crossing the street to play at their friends house. Adults should understand not to do 50 in a neighborhood cause kids, adults, animals, could be crossing the road. So stop being a jackass cause you think you OWN the road and slow down. I have been tempted to bring out the baseball bat, or FN-FALS to get the point across.

Chris

Drivers certainly have to do their part but this appears to be a case of irresponsibility on the part of tew parents. Could someone please explain how the hell a two year old manges to get out of the house and into the street without anyone noticing that he is missing until they hear tires screeching outside? People should get their asses off of the couch and show their kids some attention and less incidents like this will happen. When I'm at home I spend just about every waking minute with my daughter. She has no opportunity to go wandering around the neighborhood and getting hit by cars. One rule in my neighborhood that is also helpful in avoiding situations like this is that you are not allowed to park cars on the street which greatly improves visibility.

You pretty much have to get used to it; you don't really have any other options unless you plan to be one of those old fuckers who drives into a crowd runing little kids over. Or the guy who shoots a neighbor kid because he came to get his dog off your property.

If having children teaches you anything, it teaches you that you can't control everything. You might not like kids playing in the street, but you have to deal with it.

The alternative is running some kid over or dealing with a the police or an angry parent because you were too selfish to slow down or exercise a little patience.

Have you ever seen how fast a two year old can sprint 30 yards when so inclined?

Mine was not out by herself. She was playing in our front yard with adult supervision. The car was traveling to fast to stop at the dead end and turned into the yards to prevent putting their car into the trees. Oh yeah I forgot to mention this person was a broke f**k without insurance so we had to pay out of pocket for their f**kup. People don't seem to realize driving is a privilege not a right. If your broke ass can't maintain financial responsibility get yourself a bus pass.

I wasn't referring to your case but it's great that your daughter is OK now. I should also note that it is almost always some deadbeat with no insurance who does this sort of thing. A few years ago my wife was slowing down to make a left hand turn when some jackass, not paying attention, runs right into the back of her with out even slowing down. When I showed up I had words with the offender just before the police threatened to arrest me? That's right, they were going to arrest me for yelling at the guy. As it turned out he had no insurance. F@#%ing losers!

I don't think that 'occasional smacks' should be limited to children; some adults can use a good smack now and then, too.

I think the cone thing is kind of lame myself, but if someone took to running it over, you can bet the first time it happened the next time it would be filled with cement. Cer-chunk!

Seriously, it's only a big deal if you make it one; kids are just being kids by playing, slowing down will only cost you a few seconds and could prevent an accident. Accidents do happen, even to parents who do everything right; you can be standing on the side of the road talking to someone holding your childs hand and something distracts them and they bolt into the street - doesn't make you a bad parent, just means that its up to you as a driver to be cautious and aware of your surroundings.
