Question What leads to a sense of fairness in an individual?

As a continuing ed student in the school of life - I have been noticing some trends lately that have concerned me. I am trying to figure out what leads to people being "fair" or others feeling some sort of sense of entitlement that leads to unfairness.

Example A - Went to the grovery store the other night. Same night as hockey playoffs. 'Canes in town. Parking lot is CRAMMED with cars being left there as they carpool to the stadium a couple of miles away to avoid paying for parking. I almost couldnt' find a place to park to actually patronize the businesses there. Then, while walking in - I see a Focus parked IN FRONT OF the cart corral sticking 1/2 way out into the lane. What makes this person think they are entitled to do this? Same with idiots that park in the fire lane instead of walking the other 30 feet to the lot.

Example B - At a race - there was a tire issue - the supplier did not ship the appropriate tires. Result - not enough tires to go around. Supplier offers solution of running an alternate tire on one rear. In some instances, this would involve some folks giving BACK a tire. But - the entire field would be even. Some participants were "OK - no problem", some were concerned about safety (non-issue), some wanted to be allowed to run older tires they already had "scrubs", and some seemed only to want to place blame. Some were adamant that they WOULD NOT give up a tire and thought they should be allowed to run all new if they had them. When the scrubs were OK'd - you could almost see the wheels turning in some folks heads thay they were gonna run back to their cars, throw on NEW tires and put a slow lap on them - making them "new" scrubs.

Example C- the old 24 items in the express lane. What justification do these folks offer in their heads that tells them that sign does not apply to them?

Example D - Downtown, there is a rule that handicapped parking places are not subject to meter / time limitations. Local TV investigation showed that TONS of cars were those of state / city workers with either expired hangtags or, that truly were not handicapped - like the one that was a security guard in the courthouse.

These seem to cross all gender, race, social and economic lines.

Do you know any of these people? What's their reasoning?

If they are a handicapped parking place stealer, do they also park in the fire lane? Is their behavior the same across the board, or only limited to certain areas? Are they hyper competitive / win at all costs folks?

From my experience - when confronted - most don't seem to think they have done anything wrong and are pretty indignant about it, or seem to think the blatant unfairness is OK. Is that real? Or are they just bluffing?

Common sense ain't all that common anymore.

My Grandfather was a Chicago fireman, and I have old pictures to prove this; when a car was parked in front of a fire hydrant, they would break the glass and run the worst useable hose they had THROUGH the car to the hydrant. In the winter they would even allow for leakage at the hydrant connection in order to fill the car with water which would in turn freeze. Gramps was an engineer, that's the guy that drives and hooks up the hoses to the trucks. People just don't get it, the signs and markings are there for a reason.

I claim they're evil ... or just this side of evil without the balls to take it all the way. My case -

evil lite or selfish - Taking the last square of toilet paper off the roll in the bathroom at work and not replacing it with a new roll.
evil - Pulling twelve handfulls of TP off the roll just to make sure it's all gone for the next poor sucka.
evil platinum - Pulling twelve handfulls off the roll, jamming it down the toilet which you've previously loaded with a burrito shit, kicking the flush handle and bolting from the bathroom as turds swim over the falls ... not before turning on all the sink faucets and flinging paper towels over your head like confetti.

So you see how close selfish is to evil? It's just a tequila shot's drop in inhibition away.

"respect" has been replaced with "self" with many people.

My 2 cents...Try not to focus all the things that are wrong in this world and seek out the good. It makes life much easier to deal with. At least it does for me.

Don't even get me started on handicapped parking violators; I have a wicked history of confronting people who do that. My most often used line is, "Laziness is not a handicap."

For a while I had these permanent adhesive stickers that explained how parking in handicapped spaces was not only a crime, but also put people who really needed the space out. The first car I put it on was a brand new yellow Vette driven by some woman who didn't want to try and find a regular parking place by the post office. For several days after I saw that sticker in various forms of decay as she tried to get it off her car with little success.

I've blocked cars in and called the police, I've followed people into stores telling them that they needed to go back and move their car or I would follow them around their whole time in the store yelling at them. I've contacted the owners of company cars when they were driven by employees and filled out complaints.

If you park in a a handicapped spot and I see you don't have a sticker or a plate; it's going to be a bad day for you.....

PS: JT, I did yell 'litterbug' at an older woman who threw her cigarette out the window at a light....

Personally, the only thing that keeps me in line is fear of being repeatedly raped in prison by Tyrone the anal destroyer and then sold to the aryan nation for a pack of reds.

Other than that, game on bitches.

I've watched a woman stand in a parking spot RIGHT in front of a busy restaurant to 'hold' it while her husband was trying to back his large truck up and park it. As a line of people with their signals on began to form to 'claim' the spot, he stopped struggling to get the damn thing turned around and went to park somewhere else. When the first person with their signal on pulled into the spot that the woman was STILL standing in, she began to yell at the car, "I was STANDING HERE! I WAS!" And until the people damn near physically moved her with their car, she was holding fast.

Then there's me going: "Are you fucking kidding right now?" And then watching another tattooed 'Neck Wal-Mart Shopper walk up to her and say: "I woulda jus' written on her windshield with lipsteeik".

My favorite are the people who get pissed in traffic. You go to merge and they speed up to fill the hole, then honk and flip you off when you take the spot. WTF? Or the guys that will literally hang out of the window, both middle fingers working, yelling, FUCK YOOOOUUUUU, ASSHOLE!!

I have found that the most frequent violators of handicapped spaces are able bodied relatives of the handicapped which to me is even worse.

I fear having a Gary Busey-esque mugshot of myself splashed all over CNN. Once I work past that fear I'm a restaurant cell-phone blabbering, sink-peeing, double-parking, fast-lane napping motherfucker.

There's a lot more to this than you know.

Basically, civilized people need other people to side with them or anarchy reigns, and as humans demonstrate the characteristic behavioral bell curve, you'll find every level of civility (or non-civility) playing out and being justified.

Phones in fucking resturants. Hate that shit too. Hate when you're directly engaged in conversation with someone - their phone rings and they pick it up and begin talking. This usually happens with girls. "Hey, what's up? *laughs* So what are you doing? Where? Oooh, sounds fun. I'm just sitting here, doing nothing. Doing nothing. I'm just sitting here doing nothing. No, that's ok, the reception must be bad in here. I was just talking to Clin.. Uh, Clint?"

YES BITCH, IT'S RUDE TO DO THAT SHIT!

Here is the opposite issue. Here there are approximately 5000 handicap spaces at every 7-11, mini mart, wal mart, costco, taco bell, out house, cat house, you name it.

Its rediculous.

No, I ran out a while back; can't remember the name of the site where I got them (I ordered them online). If I can think it up, I'll post it.
