Dammit Arthur, you scared the crap out of me. I was trying to remember what your placed looked like and if there was a hot tub on the deck... I was 2 seconds from doing the frantic cell phone call!!
I am very relieved to know it is not your place, and that you are ok.
At first it was thought Lightning to the metal chimney, but last storm was two days ago.
If you look to the left of the chimney as it exits the roof, you will see a hole. (it is 2 feet long by 6 inches wide).
If you look at the rafters on the left two of them have heavy charring in htem. Those go all the way to the non existing ridge vent. There is no other damage in any other rafters. It was thought that the fire smoldered for two days, till it hit a point where it could feed. The attic of the home was filled with Newsprints and books.
The other thinking was that the owners put a bureau on an extension cord in the bedroom. This was used to power an old TV.
We did some adding up of water usage.
15 tanker trips @ 3500 gal each time equals 97,500 gallons of water. Plus 15 gallons of foam.

This summer, my next door neighbors house burned down...nothing like sitting and waiting for your own house to catch, that was a scary day. Luckily the fire department got there fast (they better, we've had 4 house fires on the block in 5 years) enough to save our house.
AFFF foam is used in 3 to 6% per gallon of water. Cheif used it to take the fire down to a point where we could then use water for overhaul.
I'm not sure why foam was used on regular Class A house fire. Was it a surround and drown, or did you guys get in and knock it down? I've never seen foam used on a house fire, not even on a defensive attack, it's allot harder to clean up and causes more damage to the house and it's contents. Were you working with a limited water supply?
What the hell do you need water for when you're doing overhaul? Overhaul is after the fire has been knocked down, mainly just tearing shit down, making sure there is no hot-spots and doing some clean-up. Make sure you wear your B/A, we're losing allot of guys to cancer with-in 5yrs of retirement.

We started as a knock down, which we used the foam on. When it was found that the roof started to give out in the front, and the third floor was deemed unsafe, we did a surround and drowned method.
The foam is used as part of protocol from the chief, who will use anything to knock a fire out. He is more concerned on keep the guys safe, and worry on the rest later.
Once it was deemed under control and turning into a overhaul, the foam is d/ced.
I run either a pumper or a tanker as I have been doing this for so long. We only have 3 hydrants in town with a crew of 20 members to cover 5000 citizens. I helped convert a 64 Howe pumper into a heavy rescue unit. This truck is now being retired and a new pumper/heavy rescue unit is being bought.
