Took my eldest back to college tonight (he works weekends back here) and arrived to a very crowded dorm: Apparently one of his fellow freshmen on his floor had a fatal stroke as he was walking out the front door of the dorm. Literally dropped dead on the spot. When we got there he had already been taken to the hospital (DOA) and grief counselors were talking to the kids as they arrived. A lot of stunned faces in that lobby.
Figure that kid had to be all of 18 or 19 years old. A tragedy to be sure, and definitely one that makes you pause and examine your own life a little bit more.
Is it me or are we hearing about more and more youngsters dropping dead of "older" diseases / causes? Things like heart attacks during HS sports, and not this - what's up? Happening more, or just hearing about it more????

It's very rare for people that young to have strokes (especially for them to die from them), but not unheard of. Usually at that age they are something called a transient ischemic attack (fancy word for stroke that doesn't kill you and you recover from in under 24 hours).
Many times there is an undiagnosed genetic or other type of clotting disease/ inherited disorder. More often than not they can manifest as early as 4-6 years of age. It is very scary because a 6 year old brought into the emergency room with loss of use or limited mobility can be often mis-diagnosed. Many doc's are unfamiliar with this type of syndrome and will chalk things up to a new or paranoid parent. Sometimes the patient will be sent home (especially in the case of a mild transient attack where recovery occurs very quickly) without the full battery of tests.
Many times these small attacks are simply a warning sign of things to come. Believe it or not the statistic for childhood strokes is 1 in 25,000.
Damn scary, I have a friend that had a severe stroke last week. His is only 27.
He partied all day for the Superbowl, got up for work and had 10 Red Bulls to keep him going. He is currently paralyzed on 1/2 his body and has a feeding tube.

Sad deal.
Incredible. I hope there is some light at the end of that tunnel.
