It's really sad that the split happened. I strongly prefer road racing, but open wheel oval racing takes huge balls of steel. Racing TV is very difficult to market. However, the IRL's rules package has produced outstanding action - both on the track and on TV. Road racing can't match the drama of cars going wheel to wheel - literally witin 12" or less, (sometimes touching) for lap after lap, at 220+ mph.
I've been very fortunate to meet some pro race engineers thru various racing forums on the net. This has gained me entry into the teams' trailers. When you've managed that, you get an entirely new perspective on the business of Pro Racing. It's really cool to get a glimpse of the telemetry, then watch the pros debrief the drivers, order changes to the car, watch them happen, then watch for the results.
