Our family is going to try to adopt a family that has lost it all from the huricane. Trying to find out how to best get in contact with the effected people here in Houston. Once I get more info I will pass it along here. Maybe others here could also adopt families in some way or another if you are able to.
Jesus Red, this is really getting sad. What's it been? 1 week?
You're like a stray cat scratching at the door on a cold night. You feel bad for the poor thing, but you just know that if you let it in it'll piss and shit all over your house.
My issue on adopting a family is that I don't want to adopt someone on a random basis. I'd be willing to do it for someone who was vouched for by someone I know.

Bingo. What if you got one of the looting type families. I would want nothing to do with them.
That is a really nice gesture. I'm here from New Orleans with my family and my fiancee's family. I have to say that the people in Texas are AMAZING. We are staying with friends in the Woodlands---at three different houses because we have so many people. A friend of our friends (who we have only met once) just moved to Chicago and was getting ready to put her house in the Woodlands up for sale. She has told us we can all stay there for as long as we need.
Our family is very fortunate. We live in Jefferson Parish and our house suffered wind damage but no flood water. Neither did my future in-laws nor any of our siblings. My house and grandmothers house in Lakeview is under 15 feet of water, along with my Jeep. We fled in my fiancees Mercedes.
For me, the most important thing, other than my family being safe, is the fact that my business is safe. I have contacted all of my employees to tell them I will continue to pay them throughout this ordeal and that I will also arrange for housing for them if they have none.
We are totally blessed. I was scheduled to pick up my new Viper at Huffines yesterday, which I did. I will store it in Houston for a few weeks. All of the men in my family will be going back by Monday to get our homes and offices in order. We will go back for the women as soon as we have electricity and potable water.
Thanks to all the Texans who have been so kind to us.

You deserve to be commended for this. Glad to see you taking care of your employees.

We are taking a step of faith here. But there are so many suffering people I just cant sit by and do nothing. Anyway, hopefully there can be some sort of screening process.
I would think that a family unit would be safer than a group of teenage boys with no mom or dad.
Anyway, we are going to adopt a family with the faith that it will benefit all.

I adopted 3 different families so far (one set is in-laws), and maybe 2 more. Don't know how long they will be here because Slidell is out of power for a while. One of them is from New Orleans. Some of them may need jobs.....anyone need any help?
John, I have one coming that knows turbos and fab...need an extra hand?

You and your wife are good hearted. Growing up one night an entire family was slaughtered in our small town. The guy was a person down on his luck and the Christian family wanted to do the right thing. They took him in, fed him, cleaned him up and more. Several months later he repaid them for their kindness. Do it but check them out first like a back ground check. I can help you with that through a company we use for new hires.
Me personally I would be looking for a family where the husband had a job where he had been employed for several years and is now displaced. Be prepared for the new guest to be there for at least one year, maybe longer. I have met several plumbers and I am hoping to give 2 of them jobs starting Monday.
The government will take over several apartment complexes here and place families and pay the rent until they find jobs.
Good luck in your search, call the Star of Hope mission

hey chip - call me when get get a chance, thanks - 713-828-7676.
and if i come across any axe murders i will send them to live at red's house.
It's great to see people chipping in and helping out.
It's not quite so dramatic, but Kasey and I were living at our old house which was just a block from the Peace Bridge (the entrance to Canada from the US).
Anyway, we were having a party and noticed a young guy sitting on a park bench next door so we asked him if he wanted a beer or something. It turned out he was refused entry into the US because his paperwork wasn't in order and he was stuck for 3 days before they would let him in.
We felt bad because he had no money and no place to stay, so we put him up in our sunroom until he could get things figured out. He ended up staying with us for 4 days. (At one point he pulled me aside and asked if we always partied like this because it was a holiday weekend and we didn't stop drinking for 3 days. Poor kid didn't know what he was getting into.)
Long story short, I ended up buying him a $20 bus ticket back to Toronto on the fourth day.
6 months later we got an envelope in the mail. It had $20 and a 3 page letter from him thanking us for our generousity and telling us that he thought we were the most wonderful people he had ever met.
It definitely feels good to help someone out in their time of need once in a while.
