Hey Redbeard

Do you know if the cellphone marine antennas are worth a shit? My reception is terrible from MM 591-502 and I've considered buying one.

Re: Hey Redbeard

http://boatantenna.com/cellular/634.htm

Will it help? Some, but the best solution is tower placement and complaining of poor reception, alot.

Most of the new systems of Digital Cell-phones are limited to under a watt broadcasting power. this is due to smaller batteries, and the introduction of digital formats. With analogue(which I found can give great range, but most new installs are digital only) you broadcast at a 3 watt and tool down to .6 when on standbye.

Digital you are working the same way only the need for pushing the signal so strong isn't needed.

So to answer your question

Were you in a salt water application I would say depending on amount of times on the water, but with you on a river, it will assist in getting the signal out, as it will put the antenna higher on the boat. Another suggestion to help would be to make sure the radio or cell unit is well grounded. This will help as well

Re: Hey Redbeard

My anolog phones got out fine. But these newer digital phones lack in ability.
I ran this question up the ladder earlier today and the Com Lt. told me that if I had any type of pos gain on reception that it would screw up my phone for good.

Re: Hey Redbeard

First I ever heard of it, and it it was an issue then why do other phones work fine with them already?

Check with anyone who has one already. Ask the local marine supply store if they had complaints. or if they had issues with a particular brand. I'd like to see if Anthony has had an issue in the past.

Re: Hey Redbeard

Matt:

After talking to several boat owners, they have yet to find an issue like you describe. some prefer using a Shakespeare antenna that has a booster/amp available. If installed correctly, there should be no reason for your phone to suffer any problems.

Just be sure all connections are as water tight as you can get them, and your grounds are good and clean.

Everyone has a different idea of what is "worth a shit". The consumers don't really want it so much to make calls and the carriers want ways to charge you fees.

Soon it's TV/movie downloads, RFID and ads on demand.

I just want it to make a call.

If your talking 4G stuff...that's awhile.

Catwood,

You shrivereld up little loser. The only thing that saved your pathetic ass before was the fact that I had a lot of other stuff to do. And simply didn't feel like wasting my time ripping you a new asshole.

However, perhaps you can prove that you have a little self worth.

Re: Hey Redbeard

cingular...that's part of the problem. Can you switch the setting to AMPs only (analog mode). GSM/TDMA isn't as robust for distance. AMPs goes to full power and is not adjustable. Battery life is short but you can be further from a cell site.

and fuck you slow pokey

Can't do it. It's DSM or nothing. And if I were you I may be concerned about calling me names. I have some 16 year old girls that like to kick ass.
