North Korea Says It\'s Reprocessing Nuke Fuel Rods
Quote:
SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea said Friday it was reprocessing more than 8,000 spent nuclear fuel rods, which U.S. experts have said will give the communist state enough plutonium to make several atomic bombs.
hmmmm...... maybe they didnt get the message after all....
I thought I read as recently as yesterday that there had been some "backdoor" discussions between the US and NK and that the US was softening its "no negotiations" stance.
Somehow I think this will make that more complicated.

Re: North Korea Says It\'s Reprocessing Nuke Fuel Rods
They were softening their stance. They are trying to bolster their position before talks begin. The US wants to negociate away their nuke program. The bigger their nuke program is, and the more tied to it they seem, the more they think we will have to concede in return for giving it up.
They are playing a very dangerous game, however, because the last I heard was that Bush may refuse to bring the USA to the table at all.
The NK's are a bunch of idiots. Diplomacy is one thing. Rattling your saber so much that nobody even to even talk to you is another.
The US has the power position now - we scared the shat out of them with our actions in Iraq. They are trying to act like a boxer who took a hard hit and "laughs it off". Thing is we're not that stupid. I hope

Toby,
You're not serious, are you?
Can you explain to me how "if this goes to guns and bullets we'll have a draft and 1000's dead"???? You're completely wrong, but I'll enjoy reading your explanation anyway.
No offense, but I can't stand the "OMG THE SKY IS FALLING" types. Pisses me off.

Re: North Korea Says It\'s Reprocessing Nuke Fuel Rods
Where is OMG THE SKY IS FALLING in the word "if” I said IF we attack on the ground.... this will most likely happen.
Keep in mind. I am a business man…not a military guy or someone who works in the pentagon…its just my 2 cents.
The people I have talked with about NK tell me that their army and their people are not like Iraq. They are highly trained crazy MF's. They also have a larger army than we do as well. I am not talking missiles and bombs...I am talking men.
My father in law knows a former fighter pilot who flew for NK years ago and he tells him things about what goes on over there...they have one tough army.
I have talked with a Vet from the NK war and he has told me that when NK attacks they come in waves...so many men that they can't kill them quick enough before being overrun.
He even told me that one time his group was running out of ammo as they where coming so fast and in such great numbers. The only thing that saved him was a jet that dropped a bomb and killed enough of them so they could get away.
Like I said before...based on what I know and have read...if we attack on the ground...1000's of US guys will die. Sure we will win...but still it will cost a lot of lives...hence the statement...NUKE them all.

maybe I am wrong..hell what do I know...what does anybody really know..unless you are there...I am not...I am just sitting in a plush office with a view trying to run a company.
I wish I knew someone who had FIRST hand info not "what I heard or I saw on the news last night"
Anyone here have that kind of info?

Re: North Korea Says It\'s Reprocessing Nuke Fuel Rods
They are within mortar range of Seul, South Korea. Allegedly they have 100,000 mortars target at the South Korean capital. US Army analysis predicts that the entire city of Seul will be a wall of fire within 6 hours assuming that the north koreans only uses conventional weapons. Quicker if more advanced weapons and ordnances are used.
North Korea have more people in their special forces units than the US does. Their army is bigger than the US army. They are not as technically sophisticated but they are crazy, willing to die rather than surrender. Remember the sub that hit ground outside south korea? They didn't capture a single person alive from that sub. Every single one killed themself after being chased extensively.
That is one messed up nation and the people appears much more brain washed than the Iraqi people.

Re: North Korea Says It\'s Reprocessing Nuke Fuel Rods
Mike, Iraq had the fourth largest army in the world too. Remember?
Second, Toby, regarding their air force, it's a JOKE. You realize that their pilots average 7 hours of flight time per year, right?
Those people are eating boiled grass to stay alive. Their army is made up on conscripts, not like the US all-volunterr army composed of highly trained professionals. Their equipment is outdated, their army is ill trained and horrendously ill equipped. Most of the army is there because they have to be or because the economy is so bad there is nothing else to do.
Now, in any war you must consider the objectives. If we had a ground war with NK where we are trying to secure land that is held by dug-in NK forces then yes, it could be messy - but I don't think we would ever enter into a ground war like that. And it would certainly be a whole lot LESS messy than the first Korean war.
If anything, we could launch surgical strikes against nuclear assets in NK. I doubt we would do that, but we might. We are so far from a military solution to the NK "problem" it's not even on the table.

Re: North Korea Says It\'s Reprocessing Nuke Fuel Rods
They have the 100,000 mortars and from what I understand they have enough ammo to fire them for two weeks 24 hrs a day. We would have to get our 37,000 troops out of Seoul before anything starts..Our airstrikes could take them out but it would take awhile..They also have short range missles that could lay an egg on Japan and claim to have a long range missle that could reach the west coast.
If we let them become a major nuke power with that little Marty Allen look alike running the place the world will become a lot less safe place to live..

Re: North Korea Says It\'s Reprocessing Nuke Fuel Rods
Yes, it is true (at the time of GWI that is, not GWII).
Numbers mean very little. The war in Iraq was a turkey shoot... we mowed them down easily. Unless NK is planning to pull a Stalin and just throw bodies at our troops until we run out of bullets, we would not have too hard of a time taking down NK.
As I keep saying, in any war you can't talk about the cost in terms of life - what matters are the objectives. The only war that could cause high casualties would be an offensive war against NK where we are attempting to displace soldiers and sieze NK occupied land. That sort of war would never happen. If we decide to strike NK's nuclear facilities, what do you think they are going to do? Get on their non-existent navy ships and come and invade us? Launch a nuke? I mean, let's get real.

I so agree SRT..lets get real...who would think of attacking the USA on it own soil. I mean..geez...what are those crazy doom and gloom thinkers going to come up with next...maybe crashing airplanes into skyscrapers? So silly to even think of such things.

Re: North Korea Says It\'s Reprocessing Nuke Fuel Rods
Well, we do have thousands of troops stationed there. I suppose they could make 9/11 seem like nothing by wiping out a much larger portion of our people pretty quick. Unless we pulled those troops out, I dont know there is much we can do about it.
Unlike Iraq, I think NK would attack if we tried to build up troops in the area. Where we had months to put troops in the region and put Iraq to our own timetable, I dont think NK would sit back and wait.
Logistics of fighting NK would be something very difficult to overcome.
