I was interested to see what someone who owns it thinks of it. It is supposed to be the most powerful handgun in the world right now. Sure Dirty Harry said the .44 magnum was way back when, but step aside .44 and look at this picture to see the two side by side:
This is one bad ass gun. I saw some shooting show on TV yesterday where they compared about 10 of the World's most powerful handguns and the S&W 500 was head and shoulders above the rest.
I've held one (it's VERY heavy) but never had the chance to shoot it. Limited production and the dealer wanted serious buyers only. I did'nt have the $1,100 bucks lying around.
That is a pretty sweet looking gun. I wouldn't mind having one. Reminds me a little of the joker's hand gun that he used to take down the Batplane in Batman. I wonder though, at what point has the gun outgrown it's usefulness and just for show? WHich of those two handguns would you rather have in a gunfight?
I looked at them when they first came out. I then shot a friends .454 Casull and decided I'd go with the .44 Super Redhawk. If the .500 Smith was bigger than the.454 Casull, it must leave a hammer mark on your forehead. As for shooting lighter loads, what's the point of having a big bore magnum handgun if you have to run light loads through it to make it tolerable.
I also like the .44 Super Redhawk, just the right size for bow hunting white-tails and Mr.Blackbear comes outta the brush and stares at ya....
ain't goin' bear huntin' with a stick with a razor blade attached to it.

Actually, the recoil is said by most to be less than the .454 Casull, due to the sheer mass of the piece and the design of the grips. The new 460 Magnum is built on the same X-frame, and is loaded to 60,000 cup, or about the same pressure levels as a big game rifle. It is designed to be the highest velocity big bore and if someone wants to fire light loads in it, they can load the 454 Casull!
Recoil is said to be even more manageable than the .500.
I really dislike the Casull's western frame. That makes it extremely difficult to control muzzle rise. On the flip side, the DA frame transmits more recoil into the meaty part of your thumb. Anyhoo, firing any of the aforementioned bad boys is all about making the first shot count.
