For a change of pace, next month we're going with two contests instead of a giveaway. The first place winner in each contest will get a new iPod Shuttle with $25 credit to Apple's iTunes from which to start their collection.
Theme #1: Vipers
(seems appropriate for the first contest, dont you think?)
It can be anything Viper related or with a Viper theme. You have total control over the content - however, you must take the photo. You may not submit someone elses photo for this contest. You can submit a photo you have taken in the past or one that you create fresh.
Theme #2: The Spirit of ViperAlley
A photo which you feel best represents ViperAlley - it can be anything or any kind of photo (original, retouched, artistic); the only requirement is that you take the photo or have verifiable permission from the copyright holder to use one of their photos from which create your own image (this assumes that you use a photo as the basis for your own submission and not simply submitting someone elses photo) and they are willing to give ViperAlley permission to use the photo for its own purposes.
Here's how it will work:
Throughout the month on Feburary, people will be able to upload their photos into a two special categories within the Photo Galleries (I have to write this, so will take a week or two to get it into place). At the end of the month, we'll begin the voting. Members will then have 10 days to vote in each category. At the end of the 10 days, the photo with the most votes in each category wins the iPod.
Rules
Other that the requirements outlined above, the following restrictions/rules apply: Only one photo per member per category can be submitted. All submissions will give ViperAlley the right to display or use the photos as it sees fit on its website. This includes its display in the photo galleries or anywhere else on the site. Any photo determined to be used without permission or wasn't taken by the member will be removed. Material deemed inappropriate by the moderators will be removed and the member notified of any issues with their submission.
So get your thinking caps on and get ready!

Re: Febuary Photo Contests for 2 new iPod Shuttles!
I'd say that we start out giving people alot of room to submit what they want as long as it conforms to the theme. I would caution against trying to submit anything pornographic - unlikely we'll allow anything that goes beyond an R-rating.

Well SHOOT ME NOW!! Why don't we just cut to the chase and issue Toby one of the I-Pods Now!? Nobody and I repeat Nobody has taken nicer photos of Vipers than he has!
Grumbling...
I might as well go for the spirit of the Alley Contest.

Cool idea MP - btw, what do you mean by members voting, as in, anyone registered, or supporters?
I'd say anyone who is registered; however, I do want to be sure that we don't have users "stacking" the vote by using AEs. I thought about this on the plane, but didn't think of it this morning when I wrote the post - the idea that people could register id's and then use them to vote for a photo.
We could do one of the following:
- encourage people to vote only once and threaten that anyone who is caught cheating will be disqualified and "out'd" as a cheater in the forums.
- limit voting to people with X number of posts
- limit voting to site supporters
I like the idea of an honor system simply because it's less work for me and I'd like to think that by making it clear we expect the voting to be entirely legit that we can avoid any stacking of the votes.

What about making the submissions anonymous, so members won't know who submitted them?
