My great dane started peeing out of his butt last Friday - I thought that maybe he just ate something... Saturday he was looking really bad - diarrhea and throwing up. When he started to shiver - I knew it was more than just something he ate...
Called his vet - she thought that maybe it was a bone I fed him - and that it wasn't uncommon for those to get wedged in their intestines... They wanted to do an xray now - and possibly surgery that night...
So, I loaded him up and me and Kathy went to the vet Saturday night about 8pm.
We walk in - and titan just sat there... She stuck a thermometer up his ass for his temp - he didn't move. There were a few others in there also - and while titan was laying there on the ground - he went diarrhea again... It just wasn't like him - this horse is hyper - and is never ill... Now he was having issues - but he didn't have the strength to even move from his own diarrhea.
We took him into a back room - he had diarrhea again - and then threw up... He just sat there staring at me - his eyes completely bloodshot. They took him through the door to do some tests and xray... As soon as that door shut and he was on the other side - I could hear him going ballastic... They were trying to get him up on a table and chain him... If you have never heard a dane bark - lets just say that I am surprised the windows weren't shattering...
After listening to that for a few seconds - I walked up to the receptionist and told her that if titan can just see me - he will remain very calm. She doesn't move.
Kathy looks at me - and said that I needed to do something - and that receptionist couldn't give a crap. I can hear titan's claws on the floor.
I hop over the half door - and walk back... The receptionist is now on my heels telling me I cannot go back there. I open the door - and I see four people trying to lift titan... I think my words were - 'what the fuck are you trying to do - the dog is fucken exhausted - get away'. They backed up - titan looked at me - I snapped for him to jump up - and he did. I said 'sit' - and he just sat there staring at me. Needless to say - I stood by him and then they all worked on him - zero issues...
The xrays came back fine - no bones stuck. But, she said that with that much vomiting and diarrhea - he was critically dehydrated. So, they wanted to hook IVs up to both front legs - and get his red blood cells back up... Titan couldn't even keep his head up when I had my hand on him...
I took him back to a large cage when they hooked him up to machines... Very mellow...
I shut the cage at about 1:45am - we were there for hours. My last visual of titan - he was laying there completely exhausted - he had one red eye open - his tail wagged a little bit at me - and then I saw another puddle forming of diarrhea - and he didn't move at all... Wow - talk about feeling hopeless...
In any event, they released him this morning - and I brought him home... He is still very weak and eating a special food with more nutrients... What sucks is I have no idea why this happened - so I don't know what to correct. All I do know is that it really sucked seeing my dog in pain - and seeing other people getting him so worked up when he had no energy to begin with. He is sleeping at home now - getting better...
Glen.....I hope the best for Titan. From the pictures you have posted before he looks like an awesome dog. Hang in there I know when I had to leave my German Shepherd in the vet overnight a while back I felt helpless as well. He will be back to normal in no time.
Damn dude i'm sorry to hear that. Sounds like hes doing better, who knows could be a virus of some sort. I'm shocked they tryed to take her in back alone.
Oh Glen, I feel for you! It is soooo heartbreaking to see your animals sick and helpless. I don't want to alarm you, but did they rule out a gastric torsion, or mesenteric (sp?) torsion? Please make sure they did all the tests to rule that out. We lost our greyhound to that a year ago, and it was very fast and deadly. It is more common in larger dogs.
Please keep us posted on Titan's condition. Doggie prayers headed your way.
Yeah... Or what about the little old lady with the tennis courts in her backyard right next to you.........
She always looked guilty to me man.
Just got home - he went outside and only pee'd... So, I suppose now I'll have the opposite problem for a while - trying to get him to shit... He didn't eat or drink anything in his room all day...
I did a half laugh - I opened the sliding glass door for him to go out - and he walked right into the glass... Guess he is still a bit tired...
And then right after peeing - he stands outside the glass door with the opposite paws in the air - yes, he is a big baby...
0h no, I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe he ate something... ? who knows. Let us know how he does. I just took my Great Dane to the vet also, but nowhere near what you had to do (Anal Glands) . I'll have both my Danes think about your Titan..
Glen,
You did the right thing - and you DEFINITELY did the right thing to go back there when they were working on him- and I would tell them from now on - you stay with the dog - period. if they balk - new vet.
How were his blood values? Sounds like pancreatitis - diarrhea and vomitting - dehydration, etc. Can be serious - and can be brought on by stress or weird fatty foods. His full blood panel should really tell the tale of the diagnosis.
Glad he's home and better - I know you'll be watching him like a hawk for any signs of a relapse.
Ah man...sorry to hear about Titan, Glen. I hate it when they get sick. They can't tell what's wrong and you feel so helpless with it all. I hope he is on the road to being his old self and giving Gerald a good run around the yard soon.
Damn dude, I hopes he gets better. My wife grew up with Great Danes and we plan to get one in the future. We had a great dane before we moved out where we are now. He didn't adjust and kept jumping the fence. It took us several months to find him a loving home. He went to a home with another Great Dane and he is happier than ever. We miss the guy greatly but we couldn't stand to see him suffer out where we are.
Gentle giants and they are the world's largest lap dog.
