Hey Guys/Gals...anyone have a 97 or newer Jeep Wrangler?? I'm looking to get rid of my daily driver Acura and get a late model used Jeep. Prior to my Acura, I had a 1990 4 banger Jeep. It was very underpowered. What I wanna know is if the newer 4 banger Jeeps are grossly underpowered as well. I wont be driving this but maybe 5k miles a year so I'm wondering if I should bother spending the few grand extra for a 6 cyl.
Any thoughts? I will obviously test drive them both when I get back home but I'm just looking for your thoughts. Thanks!!
jeeps are fun for off-roading. i suppose you are talking about a wrangler. be ready to shell out some money casue gas mileage SUCKS!!! i dont know about a daily driver though. cherokee's are a little more practical for daily use if thats what you are loking for.
A buddy has one. his is a 99. They seem to break once the miles get up a bit on the odometer. His is only up to 60K miles but he has all kinds of strange stuff, such as transmission problems, irritating vibrations in the dash and some funky electrical problem in the doors affecting the window motors.
I'd stay away from it or get something older, more robust.
makara, you have a badass jeep! my g/f has a 97, 4 banger and it has a little pep to it, but i'd say get the I6 as it was suggested. make sure you have a hardtop and hard doors as well b/c it gets noisy.......
I had a Jeep - the Sahara model. Lifted it with 33x12.5s (even the fifth wheel). Looked great and was "fun".
But as an everyday driver it sucked. Gas milage was worse than the Durango (if that is possible) and especially during rain or snow, the soft top was annonying at best (no cracking the windows!).
I wouldnt recommend them as everyday drivers; but my wife still says she loved driving around with the top off.
I've had a bunch of jeeps over time. One 4 banger. Always get the biggest motor available. The 4 banger gets terrrible mileage so there is no benifit. My latest TJ could hang with my cousins mustang for almost a full 1/8th mile.
Thanks for the input guys. I guess I'll do a little more research. Although I say it will be my daily driver, I'll only be driving about 5-6 days per month! Thus the gas mileage doenst really matter.
I guess what I'm looking for is something to putt around in when I not working and actually at home (which is about 7 days a month)
Redsnake...does your gf's jeep have enough power to get by if your only driving it a few days a month??
I drove a Sahara Wrangler for about a year as my only vehicle. I had to commute to college in it. It was probably one of the favorite vehicles I have owned and often thought of getting another for a toy.
Met my wife in that Wrangler actually...great memories.
Definatley buy the 4 Liter!!! The 4 banger is a a dog! Always wanted one of my own, have a habit of borrowing my friend's. Love the look of a lifted jeep with a bikini top.
Hey, what about that Durango? People tell me it rides like *#**#. Is it that bad? I had a Jimmy which i thought was okay, is the durango worse? The Durangos can be had for not too much dineros these days....
We have a Durango as a work truck here at my shop. I like it. There is no "bells and whistles" in our model, but I like it better than the Blazer we've got.
jeff, the 4 will get you from point A to point B, but a little sluggish on the highway and what not. i say spend the extra money and get the 6, you will be pissed if you dont. my next suggestion is drive them both, then you can see for yourself.....
Damn!! Thats a nice Jeep. Not looking to spend a lot on a Jeep so that would exclude that one.
A buddy of my dad's has a 97' model with a 3" lift and 33" tires, V-6, air, hardtop, softtop, bikini and doors. It has 84,000 miles on it but he only wants 3500 for it. I think it's one hell of a deal. I mean the paint has a few blems on it but hell it's a Jeep right?
