I need to add a second phone line in my home office and I'm trying to avoid paying $8000 to a telephone installer. I'm wondering if there is an easy way?
I just want the usual set up. One phone, two lines, if you're on the first line and someone calls it rings through to the second line rather than getting a call waiting beep or going to voicemail.
That was a little bit of an exaggeration, but small business multiline telephone starter kits with about 4 phones and the "brain" is about $2000 for the hardware plus installation (although I cant see how that would be difficult to install). If you want all the bells and whistles like voicemail, etc you're looking at about $3000.
What phone do you guys recommend that can handle two lines and has a hold feature?
I forgot that a standard phone line can handle two lines. And when you say "Attach the new line to the second unused set of wires throughout the house (yellow/black or possibly orange/white combo)", this happens at the box outside the house, correct?
My house is actually as condo. Does that change things much?
For the most part no. Standard phone cable are a 4 line with each pair twisted. You should have a second pair of lines currently unused. Take the cover off the phone jack at the wall and verify this. You may see all lines connected, but usually unused lines are twisted back and covered.

Correct. Usually it's a gray box.

It could, depending upon how the place was built. There may be one central box for the entire building. If so, just let the bell guy do the install of the line. Normally costs under $100.00
As far as phones, no idea. I need one myself so let me know what you try/buy.
I have Sprint local phone service and use V-Tech phones. Sprint has a great voice mail and follow me roaming feature. I use this for my personal line, but it'd work great for business. If I am not available on the home phone - either no answer to call waiting, or not home, it rings my cell. You could easily have it ring your second line. Youcan have it try to find you for about 4 hops and you can manage the numbers it rolls to - online. Then, when it finds you, you have the option to answering the call (it tells you the phone number calling) or sending it right to voicemail.
If I get a voicemail, it will send me a text message on my cell phone. then to retrieve VM messages, you can manage the list of numbers so that it recognizes you when you call and you don't have to put in your number or your password.
V-Tech has a good 5.8 Ghz phone system, with hold features, mute, call transfer and the ability to just add phones for under $100.......... They hve always been the best cordless phones I have owned. I can be on the phone for up to 8 hours per day (for work - otherwise I am not that much of a gabber....) and they are great.
WIth all these features, unlimited long distance and a few other things, I pay $65 month for Sprint - all taxes included.
I know if you register as a business phone it's more $$$, but not sure if you can use residential service if you are working out of your home..........

My wife uses our second line for business and it did not cost any additional for business, or did we forget to tell them?
