A man who led police on a car chase through Douglas County was killed early Thursday when he got out of his car, tried to run across I-20 and was struck by a tractor-trailer, authorities said.
Douglas County sheriff's dispatchers said the chase began near Villa Rica after the man rammed a woman's home with his vehicle during a domestic dispute.
Officers began chasing the man east on I-20 at Liberty Road, and the chase ended about 5 a.m. between Fairburn Road and Lee Road after authorities put a nail strip on the highway, flattening one of the suspect's tires.
At that point, dispatchers said, the man got out of his vehicle, crossed the median of the interstate and ran into the westbound lanes, where he was hit by a tractor-trailer , which then ran off the road into an embankment.
The man's identity was not immediately released.
All westbound lanes of I-20 remained closed at 6 a.m. Deputies were routing traffic off the interstate at Lee Road, then north to U.S. 78 or south to County Line Road. Traffic was allowed back on I-20 westbound at Fairburn Road.
