I read and heard today that the 3.0 V10's in F1 for 2005 (now in testing) will be reaching/exceeding the 1000 HP mark. Remember these little powerhouses have no forced induction.
Taken from the Renault web site. One of the coolest F1 web sites on the net.
A few bits of info from the site..
The engines rev to 18,000+ RPM
Uses 70 liters of fuel and consumes 12 liters of lubricant per 100 km
Produces up to 160 decibels of noise
The engines are composed of 5000 parts of which 1500 are in movement.
Every singe part of an F1 v10 is checked using technologies such as endoscopy and radiography to insure the best possible reliability.
Over 150 suppliers are needed to build a F1 V10
A crankshaft requires at least 2 weeks to produce.
Engine assembly requires 2 weeks.
Design of a F1 V10 demands over 5000 CAD drawings.
They take off at 10 or 11 thousand RPM !! It is crazy.
What would it run to put one in a Viper ?
New f1 motors cost more, by far, than your car cost new. Very little torque down low, don't like to start from stops. And I don't think you would like the maintenance and upkeep.
At 100 Million/yr to run an F1 team, I don't think I'd want to know
Actually the better teams spend well over 200+ million and the top teams spend 300+ million. I read that Toyoya is spending over 400+ million a season.

400mil huh....think they would miss a million? I could use that and be set the rest of my life. I'd just be working for.
1.) something to do.
2.) New toys...thus adding to #1
3.) see #2.
That's a ton of money to be spending. I have to wonder how much money the team would make. I mean...everyone is tring to make a buck. How much does it cost to be a sponsor. They have to be picking up a large chuck of that 400 mil.
That is an amazing specific power output, period.
OTOH, I can't imagine that the engines will qualify and race in a trim anywhere near that level with the new regs requiring 2 race weekends per engine.
Toby will correct me if I'm wrong, but i think Michael Schumacher is the most paid sport athlete, without endorsement, in the world. That's a part of the 300 millions...

MS ranks 1 or 2 depending on who you talk too. But that ranking includes everything. The estimates are +-80 million a year.
