Surprisingly, I find that I really enjoy watching the olympics. I think it is most appealing because many (not all) of the athletes compete in the spirit of nationalism and amateur competition. It is such a breath of fresh air to see real sportsmanship, as opposed to the millionaire club athletic fare that we are served up here in the USA day after day.
In any event, I have been particularly bothered by those "athletic events" that seem to require judges to determine ultimate event results. Cross the finish line first, easy! Throw the farthest, easy! Synchronize your dive....WTF??? One judge scores a 5 and another scores an 8.5 for the same dive! OK, they may throw out the highest and lowest, but that only lessens the impact of "judging agendas"; it does NOT come close to eliminating it! How ridiculous is it that 8 judges can not agree on a score in ANY judged event? How ridiculous is it that we ACCEPT that nationalism (manipulative lying pure and simple) WILL be involved in every judging event?! What BS!
I only wish there were a way to eliminate opinion in athletic competition. Any ideas?
I'm with ya! I'm not a pro or anything, but I saw the American gymnastics broads do some stuff that looked a LOT harder than some of the other routines, but they got lower scores. Oh well...
Have some computer geek come up with a program that uses about 100 cameras at at different angles around the event and measures the movement and compares them to what is considered perfect. Then the computer measures the difference and calculates the score. Problem solved.
I bring that up each time the Olympics come on - my preference is for the most basic events - running, jumping, swimming, because there's basically no judgment calls. I've paid closer attention this time though, and even in some swimming events (probably depends on the stroke), they can be DQ'd for a "dolphin kick" coming off the turn wall, which seems to be a judgment call as well...sigh.
