Artists and liberals

Why are artists and intellectuals generally liberal?... From Dickens, Doestevesky, satre,Shakespeare, Orwell, Picasso, Kandinsky, Lennon, Marley and on and on... Can anyone name a great artist (Besides Ted Nugent and Motley Crue) who are Right 'wingers'??

People that want to make a change, must think. Thus, most liberals are thinkers. It doesn't take much thougth to keep thing the way they are.

It's also why people in the media tend to be liberal. (Drawing from my recent education from Ann Coutler).

Re: Artists and liberals

Artists think they provide a necessary service to society even if nobody wants to buy it. So they think everyone should pay because they think they provide a necessary service to society...but nobody wants to buy it.

Taxpayer: "Yes, your art is nice but I don't really want it."
Starving Artist (Liberal): "Then we will tax you for it because you should want it."

Re: Artists and liberals

Suggesting that art should be government funded is IMHO a huge waste of money. If people want to pay for your art, then it will support your profession.

I'm sure as hell not getting a government check for writing code.

Yeah, artists and liberals do seem to go hand in hand, but not necessarily intellectuals and liberals IMHO.

Re: Artists and liberals

I agree with a lot of what has been said.

Also, a lot of your artsy schools are heavily liberal and to "fit in" they can't be conservative. This is true for art, media and professors.

To be an "open-minded" liberal, you must close your mind to conservative ways.

Re: Artists and liberals

It is fricken funny because my defense attorneys I used were all black suit types and the plaintiff attorneys tend to wear flashy type suits. Clearly on average the plaintiff attorneys worth their salt make serious bank. I hate to admit it but if I was to choose the attorney route I would end up on the dark side. Doesn't pay to be honest and good.

I've always thought that they felt guilty about how they earned their money and consequently, they were not opposed to giving it up. And BTW Mak, with all due respect, I don't think you spend 3 months per year making 30 million dollars and the other 9 months trying to figure out what to do with it.
