Re: Look what I got! A copy of Gandolfini\'s lawsuit
Basically it breaks down like this:
Gandolfini had a contract for 1 year and HBO had options to keep him for 6 additional years at their discretion. There was a timeline stated for when they needed to let him know whether he was being extended or not. The suit alleges that they only signed him for 4 of the 6 renewal options, and that they did not sign him for year 5 and 6 within the timeline stated in the contract and therefore he is not obligated to do a 5th and 6th year season.
It also alleges that he is a California resident and there is a law in Cali that states no employment contract can be extended for 7 years, so since it would be 7 years (6 one-year options and the first year) that he cannot be made do to the 6th year renewal.
In laymans terms he is trying to get a judge to agree that he is NOT contractually obligated to do a 5th and 6th season. If he gets the court to rule on his side, then he can go back to HBO and say "sorry ain't doing it unless you pay me $1MM per episode!". If the court rules against him, then HBO could sue him to force him to do the show, knowing that he was under contract to do it. They could also reasonably go after him for damages and costs incurred if he did indeed break his contract.
That's all this is about - nothing to do with money in this lawsuit, only Gandolfini hoping to get the court to rule that he does NOT contractually have to do a 5th and 6th season. If/when he gets that, he is in a MUCH better negotiating position with HBO and doesn't have to worry too much about getting sued for damages related to holding up the show.

For the uber-dumb....
Sentence 1:
James Gandolfini wants to get more money from HBO for starring in "The Sopranos"
Sentence 2:
He has a contract that obliges him to do the show for up to 7 years and his pay is fixed during this time.
Sentence 3:
So he hires some attorneys to find holes in the contract that lets him get out of it, thereby allowing him to claim he doesn't HAVE to work and therefore demand more money from HBO for his work.
More distillation? And why has nobody gotten the joke on my "consumer products" thread? Where's the love? Come on - I'm fuckin hilarious!
