Just heard that we have decided NOT to push for that stupid second UN resolution. It was clear that the French were going to continue to block it so that's pretty much all she wrote. Expect Bush to address the nation sometime very soon during which he will probably give Saddam a couple day ultimatum (which he'll ignore) and then "bomb's away" by mid/late week.
I now declare the U.N. completely irrelevant. Blix turned out to be political and conniving (beyond my expectations) and is now also irrelevant. Containment, a total failure. Look folks, for any of you that are still fence-sitters out there, we gave peace and containment a chance for twelve years and umpteen U.N. resolutions ... it was an utter failure. Saddam still sits atop his pile of bio-chem weapons, starves to death 30,000 Iraqi children a year using our food aid to bolster his military and continues to support terrorism (Abu Nidal et al.) It's now time for us to give up on our weak and dithering un-friends in old Europe and get the job done the way we always have to do, i.e., on our own.
I am now for the first time in my life, completely in favor of withdrawing US support for the U.N. It is a dead and useless entity. It no longer serves it's original purpose and is simply a venue for grandstanding and posturing where pissant third rate powers like France can indulge their fantasies of greatness by thwarting the business of real geo-political players like ourselves, the Russians and the Chinese.
I am not against multi-lateralism in world affairs, it's just that the U.N. has become a morass and a deterrent to that end and is not the only way to achieve it. We multi-laterally rebuilt Europe after the war without the existence of the U.N. We can multi-laterally rebuild Iraq after this war in the same way, with cooperation and support from whoever is willing to pitch in ... except for France and Germany who should rightfully be excluded. The U.N. has now gone the way of The League of Nations. A dead entity, the victim of greed and colonial politics on the part of Old Europe. To hell with them and the U.N.
Interesting info on the containment thing though. I was watching your brother George Will yesterday and he mentioned a report concluding that containment cost hundreds of thousands more Iraqi lives than war. Logic was that Saddam is only allowed to sell enough oil to provide food and medical needs for the Iraqi people. Saddam of course spends the money on himself and lets his people (children) die.
News to some, old news to others, but nobody says it like George Will.
Containment cost more Iraqi (Muslim) lives than war??? If that's true then the past twelve years haven't been wasted. LOL
You are spot on Chuck, and as always so is my mentor George Will. And the anti-war liberals know this too, the damned hypocrites.
Let's all reset to about 18 months ago and beyond. Don't you remember all the symps whining vociferously about how containment and embargo was killing Iraqis? I certainly do. And now they are the same ones spouting "give containment a chance". Damned two-faced hypocrites.
At the root of their motivations is simple pacifist cowardice. The fear of fighting for any reason whatsoever. Think back and review your history, if you will and tell me when pacifism was ever the right choice? Never. Oppression has never been defeated by pacifism. People have never been freed by pacifism and lives have never been saved by rolling over in the face of conquest. These people and their notion of "anything is better than war" have always been wrong and they will always be wrong.
Hans Blix should go to Iraq and report how Saddam has disarmed...but no gas mask for Blixy...he couldn't find any WOMD...what would he need a gas mask for??? Here's his chance to tell the whole world "I told you Saddam was harmless!"

I bet he simply opts for unemployment benefits...
Old Hans might be getting some $ under the table from Saddam for all we know.
