Whaddaya suppose NECKCARs were doing back in 87?

Well, they probably
would've been doing 213 like Bill Elliot did for his record-setting pole until Bobby Allison did that aerial hip-check against the catch-fencing at Pocono in '88. After that, the NASCAR folks decided that a re-enactment of the 1955 Le Mans disaster wouldn't be in their best interest, so the restrictor plates made their rookie appearance.
Even I'll admit that NASCAR's not in the same league as F1, but the stuff they can do with a carburetor, an engineer and Computational Fluid Dynamics program is pretty impressive none the less. Imagine what they could do with
real cars!
And the last time a Cup car raced at Le Mans, Hershel McGriff raced a Dodge Charger there in 1976, dropping out after two hours with an oil leak. The Junie Donleavey Ford Torino went for 11 hours until transmission problems cropped up, leaving it 44th overall. The Dodge was 55th.
