For example, its my understanding a "wetback" is a racial slur, but does anyone know why? What on earth does having a "wet back" have to do with race? Is calling someone a "Gringo" a slur?
Growing up we all knew the N word was unacceptable; but you hear it all the time coming from "people of color". When I asked about this I was told that it was only a slur when used by non-blacks. So a black person can call another black person the N word without it having any negative context. I wonder if the same would be said when a girl calls another girl the C word.
Does that leave us with intent? If I intend to use the term in a negative way, then is it a racial slur, but if I mean it as a term of endearment its acceptable?
