I dont understand why people forward the stupid "dont buy gas on XX day" email. How dumb do you have to be to realize that everyone is filling up the day before or the day after, hence the weekly sales dont change?
The email got me thinking of possible alternatives that would work. I dont know how feasible or effective this would be, but if everyone as a nation stopped buying gas from one of the major gas stations wouldnt it force that company to lower prices?
I get that email too quite a bit. I think that even if that happened not much would happen. I hear that gas station owners only make 2 cents on a gallon. Maybe I'm wrong but this doesn't give much room to lower prices. I sure hope something happens soon because 11 mpg of premium sucks.

I dont think the point is to squeeze the station owner. If you dont buy from him then he wont buy from the oil company.
No, but i do constantly get all these hawwwwwwwwwt half naked chicks asking me to come sign up for their websites. Im guessing Joker put out a good word for me (good lookin' out playa). I'm also getting penis enlargment e-mails. Apparently Joker fell asleep after visiting one of said websites, after which he got a bit dizzy, and as his head thumped the keyboard, some of the private mail got forwarded.
Fortunately I haven't gotten that POS email this time around. I did get something very similar about three years ago when gas prices went up back then.

So you started the latest one going around the UK to boycott the two major filling stations
Just waiting for the truckers to get pissed off again and blockade the refineries like they did over here a few years ago. Funny how the ringleader that time apparently now has cosy job in government
Actually I think what you said would work. If everyone boycotted one company... sooner or later something drastic or catastrophic would have to happen... lower prices, out of business, owner suicide, something would happen.
People seem to forget that there is power in numbers. The problem is no one would ever agree on what company to choose. Maybe would should start with Exxon just for revenge for the Valdez incident.
Well, I keep being told Im an idiot and that would never work.
I think it would be easy to get everyone to agree because its their dollar thats at stake. Besides people are followrs, if they get an email saying to boycott Shell, then they would boycott Shell thinking everyone else was already going after Shell too. I think the trick would be to stick with it even if Shell offered gas at 25 cents less than anyone else. Maybe have a target price, then when it hits boycott everyone but Shell. Eventually the others would have to drop to compete.
But shell probably make all their money at the backend supply and where do you think the other indy gas stations who cant keep up with their new business are going to go to get supply. Who has a lot of stock that is not shifting off their own franchises..
At the end of the day it would be the single guy operating a shell franchise that would blow his brains out not the CEO of shell.
Do what happened in the UK 2 years ago. Blockade all the refineries so no fuel can get out. In a week the government will be at its knees. It helped in the UK to keep the price down for a while at least but it takes a bunch of pissed of truckers to pull it off.
Exactly but when they blockaded the refineries in the UK it was for nearly 2 weeks. After a few days ALL gas stations were running out of supply. Any deliveries that made it through resulted in LONG queues, towards the end you had to be able to show emergency service ID to get any at a lot of stations and £10 (¼ tank) max at many others. Apparently they were only a few days from the country being totally crippled when they called it off.
Most people supported the truckers and most just put up with the inconvenience as we are all just as fed up with the hugely inflated price due to the 70+% tax the government takes.
It helped for a while as the government now think twice before increasing duty on gas and most of the increases since have come from the price of oil rather then greedy government but then they still add 70% to any base price increase. Still something like $6 a gallon though.
What's it matter, if you boycott it today, you will only have to buy it tomorrow or the day after. The oil comanies would't lose a dime.
I dont mean one day, I mean weeks, months, years.
Wouldn't work for me as I drive about 100-200 miles per day. However, I am getting rid of my 12.5 mpg Ford van for a new 25 mpg Sprinter van (as soon as it comes in). I suspect that more & more people "in the trades" will be doing likewise.

You couldnt avoid pumping gas at one gas station, for example Shell. Just fill up anywhere other than Shell.
