I've been thinking of buying a street bike just to learn on and play with.
I'm looking at a 2000 R6. The ad says he has over 16K (cdn) invested in it.
Lindeman front forks, braided lines, EBC hh pads, Scotts steering dampener, billet Yamaha factory cases, Michelin pilot race medium compounds, Penske rear shock, billet rear seats, DID520, ported head, carb kit, full Yosh stainless exhaust, Airtech body, stand and $400+ of unlisted extras.
I'm waiting for him to call me back. The mileage isn't listed but it says low kms.
Price is $5700 US or $8000 cdn.
Is it a good bike? Good price?
Any other suggestions? I don't want to spend too much money because I have my V-Rod coming soon, and will still drive the Viper more often than anything. I've just always wanted a street bike.

It sounds like a reasonable price for the investment however it seems to be set up as a race bike. Almost all of those parts would be installed for the track, not just some weekend warrior. I also don't understand the billet cases part- correct me if im wrong but I'm not sure if those are available and if they are I would think it to be because of a blow up. I would say consider it if you want to take it to the track.

No Good on either Deal. You can get the 04 CBR 600 for $6200 out the door at Chicago Cycle Center. Same Deal with the 04 R6. They deal in such volume, that they are able to beat everyone in the nation.
If I were you, I wouldn't get a 600. You're going to be pissed in about 6 months when you're getting good at riding. You'll lack the power. My suggestion would be an 04 R1 or GSXR 1000. $8995 out the door from Jerry as well. Jason
You're not a small guy. Might want to consider a liter bike if you have retraint. Like Sin said above, you'll love it SO much, you'll get bigger bike in 3 months!

G - I know you're a taller guy - how well do you fit on your R1?

An 04 R1 is not a bike to start on...I would agree that in 6 months he will be bored but that is the daddy of all bikes right now......182 hp......
Those prices aren't even close to what the same bikes sell for up here though.
Plus the fact that I pay 15% sales tax if I buy new as opposed to 8% for a used private sale.
04 R6 would cost me over 13,000 out the door. The 03 CBR600 is $5000 cheaper.
The CBR in the pic above is even $1000 less than anyone else in the trader this week and has less miles than any of them. Everyone else wants 9K and up for the same bike. This guys ad says "must sell, home improvement money needed".
The biggest reason I don't want to spend the dough on a newer, bigger bike is the fact that my V-Rod will be here soon, plus I doubt I'll ride any of them very often.
I drive the Viper every chance I get.
You guys forget it's only warm here for 4 or 5 months
You'll be fine on a powerful bike. It's not the bike that kills you it's your skill. Cars, etc will still pull out in front of you just as easy on the R1 as the R6, etc. You're a mature person, I see NO reason why you can get a liter bike for your fist bike. I bought a HAYABUSA as my first bike EVER a few years ago. It was a peice of cake. Just use your best judgement and restraint on the throttle.
Clink, I fit perfectly fine on my R1, but to be honest I wouldn't really know any different. I've never been short before..
It takes as much restraint to be careful on your viper when you 1st bought it as it does on an R1.
5000 to go up to an R1? Here in the US the difference between an R6 and R1 NEW is about 2,000 U.S. Might want to perhaps try another deale? Those prices sound about 30% high!!! I got my R1 for 10,200 OUT THE DOOR. Tax, tag, title, setup, shipping fees, everything.
Gerald, the cheapest R1 within driving distance of me is a 2001 for $9500 and I don't even want to spend that much. I'm not really concerned with speed, I just want to learn how to ride and see if I even like it. I love driving the Viper too much to seriously get into another hobby. This is mainly for a toy, maybe riding it once a month.
Prices up here are way higher than what you guys see. I don't know why.
i've owned and riden all sizes and brands of bikes in 30yrs of riding....the 600cc bikes are the most fun and easist to ride...if i was you i'd get the honda or look at the kawasaki..both have good riding power and the position on them is pretty reasonable..the suzuki and the yamaha put you in a pretty cramped position and ya start cramping up after about an hour...i ride with a group here in tx and we ride 350-450 miles on a sunday pretty easily...Len
I agree about the liter bike. It is all in the wrist. Learn to control it, and you will be fine with a high HP bike. You will out grow a 600. Always shoot for the most HP since we all are HP junkies. If not you will regret buying a small bike and/or you will spend a ton of $$$ trying to get everything out of a 600.
Go big bore (BUSA or zx-12R) then when that power gets boring, spend about $4000 USD and go with a turbo. This will put you about 350+ RWHP. That should put a smile back on your face.
